Underclassmen Handling Postseason Pressure

With a state championship on the line today, the spotlight in San Antonio isn't just on veteran leaders. The 6A Division I championship tips at 5 p.m., followed by the 6A Division II title game at 7 p.m., and several underclassmen have already proven they're ready for the moment. While a few of the names below will take the floor tonight with a chance to capture a state title, others made serious noise in the state semifinals. Regardless of the round, these young standouts showed they can handle the pressure of the postseason and deliver when the stakes are highest.    The sophomore shows a strong understanding of how to navigate around the basket, using her length to impact the game on both ends of the floor. Agile and active, she's an effective shot-blocker who can alter attempts and change momentum in a heartbeat. Her combination of awareness and athleticism makes her a standout presence despite her age.     After earning district honorable mention as a freshman, Young came into this season hungry for more — and she's playing fearlessly. With the confidence of a seasoned player, her quick first step allows her to handle pressure, set up the offense, and create opportunities for teammates. She's also emerged as a major scoring threat in the playoffs, making big plays when it matters most.     Is there any surprise this freshman helped lead her team to the state finals in her freshman year? Absolutely not. Byers-Veal is the real deal. Watching her 6-foot-1 length lead the break is like seeing a stallion gallop past everyone on the court. She finishes with smooth control at the rim, effortlessly turning speed and athleticism into points in transition. Her jumpshot is just as smooth.     Gilbert's Shadow Creek squad came up short in the semi-finals (literally one point short). Gilbert is a Houston area underclassmen that must be mentioned when talking about players on the rise.     Thurmond is another combo guard that was a punch for state semi-finalist Shadow Creek. She is a glue player that earns minutes by playing lockdown defense and keeps her head on a swivel to get her teammates involved.
