BCAM Reaching Higher: Hidden Gems

BCAM Reaching Higher is the premier high school girls' basketball team showcase each summer, bringing in 60+ teams from across the state to Grand Valley State University campus to compete in front of college coaches from every level. Two days provided ample opportunity to evaluate the prospects in the gym. I was able to see most of the teams play at some point over the weekend, and these were some of the lesser-known prospects who made a statement over the weekend.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">UPCOMING PGH EVENTS (Use "EvanBell10" code for discount)</h2>   The Freshman Showcase (2030s), August 22nd   <a href="https://events.prepgirlshoops.com/e/2390/register/michigan-freshman-showcase">Registration Link</a>   The Expo (2027-2029s), September 26th   <a href="https://events.prepgirlshoops.com/e/2420/register/the-expo-michigan">Registration Link</a>    Alexis has length, athleticism, a high basketball IQ, and the skills you look for in a guard. She had an impressive opening game for Mount Pleasant at BCAM Reaching Higher that immediately had me thinking, "I need to move her up". Alexis is poised and crafty with the ball in her hands. She changes directions in the lane to get the angle and reaches around defenders in traffic to force fouls. Alexis can finish with both hands and sees the floor well in the open court. She was deadly from beyond the arc. Alexis drilled a corner three, stepped outside to sink another triple from the corner, and added a stamp to her performance late. She understood the time and situation with time winding down. Alexis grabbed the rebound, immediately pushed the ball up the court with pace using both hands, and buried a wing three off the bounce to give her team a chance to compete for the win.     Olivia was another "who is that girl" that separated herself on the court at BCAM Reaching Higher. Her length, athleticism, versatility, and abilities as a guard translate to the college game. Caledonia was very impressive as a group, and Olivia played a significant role in their success. She created separation from defenders using quick crossovers and distributed passes with excellent court vision. Olivia drained a smooth corner three off the catch and was a game wrecker on the defensive end. Her active hands and pressure on the perimeter created steals. Olivia is a stock riser who will have a number next to her name in the next rankings update.     When I don't recognize a player with college potential it drives me crazy. As I watched Sacred Heart play at BCAM Reaching Higher, Layla put herself in that category of "need to know". She shot the ball confidently from beyond the arc, sinking multiple threes, and attacked with a burst downhill to score layups through contact with her right and left hand.     Ella is a talented incoming freshman who has the length and skill needed to be a very productive wing-guard at Holt. She showed her outside range, sinking a deep wing three off the catch, then swished another smooth triple from the wing. Ella hustled back in transition to force a turnover and used great technique to deflect a pass with her outside hand for a steal. She moved to open space and converted a layup without skipping a beat. Ella had a great day at BCAM Reaching Higher and will be a prospect to follow over the coming years.     Ahnica delivered a hard-nosed effort for McBain at BCAM Reaching Higher. Her aggressiveness and hustle were a separator on the court. Ahnica scored a tough, contested layup off two feet and picked off a pass from the help side. She used her go-to move, stunning the closeout defender with a shot-fake, then took one dribble to sink a mid-range jumper. Ahnica penetrated off the dribble with a quick rip drive from the perimeter, drew the help defender, then dished a great dump off to an open teammate for an assist. Her aggressive on-ball pressure challenged guards and closed driving lanes on the defensive end.     Sadie worked hard inside to secure an offensive rebound and went up strong to score the putback. She shot the ball confidently from the outside and drained a corner three. Sadie was very effective as a face-up driver, attacking hard off the dribble to earn trips to the free-throw line. She scores through contact with her right and left. Sadie has size, length, strength, and versatility that make her a very difficult matchup for opposing forwards. She stood out for Skyline at BCAM Reaching Higher.     Natalie is an unsung hero in the backcourt who doesn't get all the limelight but quietly contributes in every phase of the game, leading the team towards success. Against an extremely talented and athletic opponent, Natalie didn't yield an inch. She dropped in a floater on a hard drive, buried a corner three, caught a pass with soft hands for a strong finish off two feet, and sprinted in to secure offensive rebounds. She battled on defense to stop dribble penetration and stayed active in the passing lanes. Natalie cut backdoor to score layups with smooth transfers, including an acrobatic and-one layup through contact with a shooter's touch. Natalie turned in an impressive performance for Salem to start the day at BCAM Reaching Higher.     Lauren first caught my attention as a middle schooler at the very first Headliners Invitational Showcase, and she's blossoming into a solid backcourt prospect for Pewamo-Westphalia. She plays with a high basketball IQ on the court. Lauren knows where to move and where the ball needs to go. She has sharp instincts and anticipation that lead to wide-open looks for teammates. Lauren made smart backdoor cuts, boxed out hard to secure rebounds, and was disciplined on the defensive end. She can shoot the three and looked solid for P-Dub at BCAM Reaching Higher.     Mia made a difference with her all-around impact for Mercy at BCAM Reaching Higher. She used a quick crossover, spin combo dribble to beat her defender to the basket and changed hands to convert the layup. Mia has great instincts and awareness on the defensive end. She's aggressive in the gaps and makes all the effort plays. Mia moved her feet quickly on the ball to stop dribble penetration, dove on the floor to secure 50/50 balls, ripped the ball away for a steal, deflected passes, and dished out assists after creating turnovers. Mia is an excellent facilitator, and she competes with a non-stop motor. She worked hard to grab offensive rebounds and absorbed contact well to score a layup in transition.
