One of the larger team camps that took place at a high school was the Chapin Shootout which emanated from the home court of the 5A Eagles. A number of colleges from across the state also committed to showing up at the Eagles' Nest.

Gaffney drew one of the toughest draws of the Chapin Shootout as Hopper's team matched up against defending 1A champion Military Magnet. Because of a 10-point performance from Hopper, 4A Gaffney picked up a tough win over the Eagles. She is listed as both a guard and a forward and one can see by how she plays as to why she can give a team minutes in either the frontcourt or the backcourt. She has the 3-point shooting capabilities of a two guard, the ball-handling capabilities of a point guard and the rebounding prowess of someone who plays the four.

Brown provides a worthwhile veteran presence for a 1A Military Magnet team with several young talents on its squad. Not only does she have veteran status but she makes veteran plays. Brown competed in all 30 of the Eagles' contests last season. As her development has improved, her playing time has increased. She averaged 7.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 steals per contest in 2025-26. Brown was one of two from the class of 2027 on last season's Military Magnet team and will look to finish her high school career by adding to what is already a very decorated trophy case on Carner Ave.

Even though Gaffney only graduated two seniors from its 2025-26 version, second-year coach Julian Wright is already pondering the program's future. Smith looks to be a key piece in Gaffney's immediate future. She primarily operates in the backcourt and has more height and length than her peer point guards. Ball-handling capabilities are another strength of Smith's and she is difficult to contain when she attacks the rim and delivers strong finishes at the cup. Opposing defenses also have to watch for Smith's ability to handle the ball with her left hand but finish with her right as well as her ability to disrupt an opposing team's passing lanes as a defender.

“Next woman up” will be a mantra for the 2026-27 version of 4A A.C. Flora following graduating a solid senior class from the 2025-26 team. Lee is showing all the signs that she will be one of those next women up for this year's Falcons team. She was a sophomore last season but is set to graduate in 2027. She brings a heads-up mentality whenever she is on the court and keeps her hands active on the defensive end of the floor. Offensively, Lee understands how to make tough shots. When she does attack, Lee can go directly to the basket or connect on a floater.

Rodgers' 2A Blacksburg team may have been on the wrong end of a decision against 3A Camden but she still put together a valiant performance with nine points. Tenacity and fearlessness are key elements to her game as she does not shy away from tough shots nor does she shy away from contact. Rodgers was one of three team co-captains on last season's Wildcats team that advanced to the 2A Upper State semifinals. She is entering her third season playing at the varsity level. Getting out in transition, collecting steals and connecting on 3-point attempts are other positive elements to Rodgers' skillset.

Johnson's highlight of her Friday at the Eagles' nest was when her 1A Division 2 Lincoln County bunch took on 4A A.C. Flora. She would tally seven points in a solid winning effort against the Falcons. Johnson was three from the class of 2028 on last season's Red Devils team. In the 16 games that she played in last season, Johnson averaged 7.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals per contest. As those numbers indicate, Johnson is a consistent threat to collect steals and create additional offensive possessions for her team. As a combo guard, opposing defenders have to watch for if she has the ball behind the 3-point arc and if she will pass, shoot or attack the rim.

Whether it is during the regular season or during camp month, the mantra of coach Military Magnet coach Nathaniel Taylor competing against tough teams from higher classifications remains a constant for the Eagles. Brown-King provided the go-ahead game-winning bucket for Military Magnet in a 32-30 victory over 3A Camden. She provides timely offense, but a bread and butter of hers is defense – as is the case for anyone wearing an Eagles uniform. The rising sophomore wing is also a gifted rebounder. She is a multi-sport athlete who has played volleyball in addition to her basketball accomplishments and averaged 7.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game last season.

As last season was reaching its conclusion, Jefferson would secure an in-state offer from Lander. One can see exactly why Bearcats coach Nicole Shelwick wants Jefferson to call Lander home following this season with 3A Camden. She has proven she can maintain a leadership role as evidenced by her being one of three team co-captains from last season's Bulldogs. As a two guard, she has a height advantage over her peer two guards. The ability to operate as a wing and combining height with length and veteran instincts are other strong attributes to Jefferson's well-developed skillset. Jefferson first played at the varsity level as a seventh grader and averaged 12.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals in 18 games throughout 2025-26.

The host Eagles of 5A Chapin encountered a last-minute schedule change on the first day of the Chapin Shootout. Even though the Eagles were set to face off against 1A Burke, they played SCISA 4A Ben Lippen instead. Chapin had a rough go of things against the Falcons but Powell provided a bright spot with a six-point performance to lead the Eagles' point-getters. Of the shots that did go in for the Eagles against the Falcons, the tough shots made by Powell were certainly among those. Powell moved in from out of state and is poised to be a worthwhile addition to the Eagles over the next several seasons.

Woods participated in one of the lower-scoring contests of the day when 5A Chapin matched up against 2A Blacksburg during the afternoon portion of Chapin Shootout Friday. She may have only scored five points, but those buckets mattered in a contest where scoring was at a premium. Woods would compete in 25 of Chapin's 26 contests last season. Woods played her middle school basketball at nearby Chapin MS before arriving on the scene with the high school team. She was one of three from the class of 2028 on last season's Eagles team and primarily plays point. Ball distribution and collecting steals are among the positives to Woods' game.
