Hope College hosted many talented high school prospects from Michigan and a handful of college prospects from additional states across the country during their elite camp on June 6th. The staff integrated their program pillars: respect, resilience, compete, and joy into the camp experience. Participants experienced tangible lessons and application opportunities throughout the day. The college staff and current players led all participants in drills and games. Prospects had the opportunity to experience drills used at practice by Hope College. The pace was fast and camp very organized, time-oriented, and meticulous in its structure. Every prospect wore a numbered reversible during camp, which made it easier for me and the coaches to evaluate them. Participants were all given a T-shirt to take home as well.

A few memorable points shared by the college staff that stood out to me included being an everyday person on and off the court, Hope's women's basketball team last season held a 3.7 GPA (highest varsity GPA average at Hope College), all players complete their degrees at Hope in 3.5-4 years, every senior from the program has a job or continued their education as a graduate student, and four current Hope women's basketball players participated in a Hope athletics foreign mission's trip during camp.

Many promising prospects demonstrated next-level qualities throughout the day, and these guards specifically stood out during my time evaluating:

Izzy has length, mobility, and fundamental skills that instantly stand out as a guard-wing prospect. Those qualities were easy to see at Hope Elite Camp. She cruised up the court with her eyes up in transition, gained the advantage by getting in front of her defender, glided through the lane, and dropped in a soft floater over the middle defender off two feet. Izzy has a silky smooth three-point jumper that makes her a perimeter threat anywhere on the court. Her systematic setup and release translated directly from the Shoot-Away drill into games. Izzy buried a deep wing three off the catch and knocked down a turnaround jumper, pivoting to get the scoring angle she needed.

Ashlyn paced her group during the between-the-legs, lift, dribble build-up series, pounding the ball hard with good speed and maximum effort. You should compete as hard in drills as you do in games, and Ashlyn made a great impression by doing that at Hope Elite Camp. Implementing instructions that are emphasized by the coaching staff is an important quality to have as a recruit. The coaching staff challenged the prospects to increase their energy and apply the program's pillars during camp. Ashlyn was high-fiving players in line, clapping, and making a concerted effort to vocally encourage others. She set screens to create open looks for teammates, threw accurate touch entry passes to rollers, picked off passes on the defensive end, and penetrated off the dribble. Ashlyn moved her feet quickly laterally, anticipated a spin move, and stripped the ball away. She used a shifty lateral pocket dribble step-back move to sink a mid-corner three and moved well without the ball. Ashlyn turned in an impressive all-around performance at camp.

Quinn was the Michigan newcomer of the day at Hope Elite Camp. She made a loud statement about her value as a next-level prospect. Quinn has a compact build and advanced ball-handling skills that translate to the college game. She set the standard for control, speed, fluidity, and effort during the between-the-legs, lift, dribble series. The word I used to describe her handles was "cat-like quickness". It looked like she could do the drill with her eyes closed. Her finesse at the rim during stretch finishes was among the best, and she created space in games using a quick, double-tap low crossover dribble. Quinn made a good read off the ball, cutting to the rim for a catch and finish. She's an effective facilitator and guards her yard well, moving laterally and using her strong frame to deter drives towards the basket.

Alayna's hard work and commitment to training showed during Hope Elite Camp. She made it look like the dribble series station was already a part of her daily routine. Alayna moved the ball between her legs and switched hands with ease, keeping her eyes up throughout the drill. Her quick feet, fluid movements, strong dribbles, and upright posture stood out amongst the group. Alayna shot the ball confidently and accurately from beyond the arc during the Shoot-Away drill. Her unselfish passing and instincts as a facilitator resulted in multiple assists on kickouts to open teammates on the perimeter during games.

Adeline was a prospect who consistently caught my attention throughout Hope College Elite Camp. She plugged right in and played well with new teammates. Adeline shot efficiently from three on the Shoot-A-Way, accurate off the catch and the bounce. She has a balanced setup, systematic mechanics, and a confident follow-through. Adeline ripped the nets with multiple threes from the wing and corner in games. She used a shot fake to freeze her defender, drove by with a burst down the baseline, then scored with a nice inside hand finish off two feet. Adeline uses the glass well to convert shots from difficult angles and handles the ball confidently in the open court, able to create separation, switching hands comfortably. She used a quick inside-out dribble with a brief lift hesitation, shifted gears with a crossover, split the gap, and drove by to score a contested left-handed finish.

Mayrese demonstrated her proficiency as a ball handler, showing excellent control, speed, and effort during the dribbling station. She shot three pointers with confidence and accuracy during the Shoot-Away drill. When 3v3 started, Mayrese went into full attack mode. She drilled a smooth straightaway three, sprinted in to score an offensive rebound putback with her left, drained a pull-up jumper in the corner off a screen, and used a quick lateral dribble to create a driving lane, then shifted into top gear for a straight line bucket. Mayrese has the fundamental tools, basketball IQ, and relentless motor needed to be an impact point guard at the next level. She had another solid showing at Hope College Elite Camp.

Avery has the height and physical stature of a forward, but she definitely showed her capacity to excel in a guard role during Hope College Elite Camp, delivering a complete performance that had me impressed from start to finish. She hit threes from different spots on the Shoot-A-Way, swished a straightaway triple in the transition drill, and did a great job helping others by pointing/directing. Avery finished well with both hands, attacking downhill on a hard drive to score a contested layup, then sealed a defender in the lane, caught the entry pass with strong hands, used an effective counter pivot, and finished with her left. Avery made a sweet between-the-legs zip pass to the corner and drew help defenders, then dished out a bounce pass to a basket cutter for an assist. Next level size, versatility to play the guard and forward, shoots well from three, strong finisher, good footwork, and facilitates.
