The Overlooked 4: Versatility But Still Important

As you all know, this position has transcended over the years. We've gone from having big bruisers that dominate the opposite block and elbow areas to kids who can stretch the floor and knock down the mid-range, especially in the dunker spots. They also can shoot 3s and are essential in the screen game. Though the position itself has changed a little, the role of a power forward still remains the same. These kids must rebound, score the basketball (especially get trash buckets), be solid defenders, and have some toughness about them. Do you agree?</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When I think of power forwards, Dennis Rodman and Draymond Green come to mind. I have to throw Tim Duncan in as well, especially in his early years. Modern-day WNBA women: Stewy, Angel Reese, etc. My point in listing these players is that the 4 spot may look a little different depending on what team or club you play for, but the mission stays the same.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I mentioned a couple of PFs early last week and how their roles have landed them with some big-time programs. Now, I want to talk about some kids who are on the come-up at that position. Call them what you may, but I must say these young ladies are versatile. They can play inside and out, handle the basketball, compete on the boards, really just bring a lot of value to their club. They are difference-makers who may not get many touches for their team, but their presence on the floor does make a difference in the little things they do. She commands the paint and displays multiple countermoves as she puts the ball in the hoop. Awesome in the in-screen game, a top rebounder, she's going to bring it nightly for her club. A fierce competitor, one who is willing to do the little things right, she will be an important piece to the Wilson Central attack this season. She's tough, making it hard for opponents to operate. She's a solid defender who can rebound the basketball at a high rate and block shots. She will be in a new role this upcoming season as she and her Lady Lion teammates look to continue their winning tradition. Gabby will be right at the forefront, leading the charge and holding down the inside. A kid who started on the block has done nothing but expand her range. She can finish around the rim, knock down 3s, and exploit the high post. What I love about the game that she added was her ability to handle the basketball. She's always looking to attack and can do so starting out on the open floor coming off a rebound. She puts up numbers, a kid who is always getting after it on both ends. She can play with her back to the basket, eating up space, or step outside and knock down the 3 ball at a consistent clip. This kid is a difference-maker and hard to stop. I love her ability to bury people down low and finish on either side of the rim. Her presence on the floor gives her squad an edge. She's tough. Has great footwork.
