How does that relate to basketball you ask? Well, a key piece to Early Bird Day is celebrating the people that show up to work early. Let’s look at some athletes that are always in the gym and the first one there and deserve some recognition on Early Bird Day.
Macy Brown Macy Brown 5'11" | PG East Grand Rapids | 2023 State MI (2023, PG, East Grand Rapids)
Let’s be real with this one. You don’t get as good as Brown is by being the 10th person there every time. She is constantly in the gym improving every single aspect of her game. That’s why Brown is a legit contender for the 2023 Miss Basketball.

Makayla Downs Makayla Downs 5'3" | PG L'Anse Creuse North | 2023 State MI seems to just flat out like the grind. She takes advantage of every opportunity presented to her to improve her game. Downs is a team player and the type that every coach wants on their roster.
Maya Anderson Maya Anderson 5'9" | PG Detroit Cass Tech | 2024 State MI (2024, CG, Detroit Cass Tech)
Anderson doesn’t just show up early. She sacrifices to be there and is there for the purpose of improving her game and ultimately, winning. Anderson is a fierce competitor that knows if she’s there first, it’s an instant advantage.
Na’kiya Bonner Na’kiya Bonner 5'6" | PG Detroit Edison | 2024 State MI (2024, PG, Detroit Edison)
If there’s a gym, Bonner will probably be in it. She’s not just one of the first to the gym, she often times there when nobody else is. That’s a big reason that Bonner is a showtime guard for one of the top basketball programs in the midwest. She’s full of upside and is doing all she can to fulfill that potential.
Damaya Hartwick Damaya Hartwick 5'2" | PG Grand Blanc | 2025 State MI (2025, PG, Flushing)
It seems like Hartwick is always ready to go. She’s one of the first on the court and she doesn’t need time to settle in. Hartwick gets there early, preps, and is at 110% from the opening tip until the final buzzer.
