There were some very competitive games across the 3 day span. Here’s a look at some of the players that made the All-Tournament Team, including the performances that earned them that spot.
Wilder filled up the stat sheet as much, if not better, than everyone that participated in this year’s 2A State Championships. She was extremely impressive all-around. She is so long, but also has a ton of guard skills, so she’s as versatile as they come. She can truly be effective inside or out. All of Wilder’s stats stood out to me, but one of the most staggering stats I saw for the tournament is that she shot 70% from 3 in Bell County’s 2 games. As far as her full stat line goes, in Game 1, she had 34 points, 9 steals, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks. In the next game, Wilder finished with 25 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and an assist.
Highlights
Mataya Ausmus
Mataya Ausmus
Ausmus was such a solid floor general for Bell County. She showed a lot of toughness and really made a lot happen on both ends of the floor. She played with high intensity defensively, really disrupting ball handlers with her ability to stay up tight on them. Ausmus has good ball handling skills and she uses both sides of the floor. She sees the floor well and delivers good passes to her teammates. She was drawing help and then kicking for good shots, as well as making strong drives herself. Ausmus finished Game 1 with 13 points, 7 steals, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds. In Game 2, she had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal, and a block.
Yeast is going to be so good. She already is a standout player, but she’s only a freshman, so she still has a ton of time to grow her game even more. She did a great job when she was running the point for Mercer County, as well as when she was playing off of the ball. She has good handles, a great shot, and she’s so quick. She led all scorers in game 1 with 18 points while also adding 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and a steal. What impressed me the most about Yeast was actually her defense. She is such a great defender, applying a ton of pressure and coming out with steals & blocks. In Game 2, Yeast finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and an assist.
Drakeford has been excellent all year long. She had a great game in the 2A opener and an even better game in Mercer County’s 2nd round matchup. She makes great fakes and strong drives to the basket. She can score tough shots around the rim, but she can also knock down shots from deep. Drakeford is a 3-level scorer and a really solid floor general. She was beating the press with ease and creating shots for both herself and her team. She finished the 1st game with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal, and a block. In the 2nd game, Drakeford had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Highlights
Feltner is one of the top players in the state and by far one of the toughest to stop from scoring. Teams do their best to keep her off of the boards and to keep her from scoring, but when you catch her live, those game plans seem to go out of the window. When she gets the ball, she can knock down jump shots or finish at the rim. A lot of teams will foul Feltner to try to keep her from scoring, but she can knock down free throws at a high percentage as well. Her team fell short in the 1st round, losing a close one in overtime to a Rowan County team that ended up making it to the Championship. However, Feltner did all she could to give her team a chance, finishing with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.
Kennedy Jackson
Kennedy Jackson
Jackson is long and she really runs the floor well. She works hard on the boards and was consistently going after rebounds even when they were coming off of the opposite side of the rim. She was really making contact on her box outs and she was clearing out players to take away their shot of getting the rebound. Jackson can knock down shots around the rim or in the mid-range, and she was able to get those shots off quickly. Her team fell short, but she finished the game with 17 points on 6/8 FG, 7 rebounds, a steal, and a block.
Emile Jones
Emile Jones
Jones is a hard worker who never stopped fighting, even when the game started to get away from her team. She moves so well without the basketball on the offensive end and while she certainly can score herself, she also looks to kick it to her teammates when help steps over on her drives. Jones is a really solid defender and she did a little bit of everything for Hopkins County Central. She finished with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
Malyea Partinger
Malyea Partinger
Partinger is a strong point guard with excellent court awareness. She has good handles and made some great passes to her teammates. She also made some good drives to the basket and she wasn’t afraid to draw the contact. She had active hands on the defensive end and she showed a lot of strengths playing defense both on the ball and in the passing lanes. Partinger led Franklin-Simpson with 11 points.
