White Knoll HS was the hub of plenty of sporting activity this past weekend. While the the Timberwolves and Summerville Green Wave were locked in an intense battle for the 5A Lower State football crown, many of the Palmetto State’s premier girls hoopers brought their A-games with them to the White Knoll courts.
We unveiled our earlier top five performers. Without further adieu, we recognize numbers 6-10 on our Top 15 list.
Eau Claire was one of the first teams to take the court at this year’s rendition of the She Got Next Thanksgiving Tournament. Tiller did plenty of Tiller things on Friday afternoon as she led her 2A Shamrocks to a victory with a 20-point performance in a 44-20 win over Strom Thurmond. How she can put the ball through the basket may be what gets accolades for the standout junior accolades, but she drew a tough defensive assignment – the Rebels’ Katlyn Chinn Katlyn Chinn 5’2″ | PG Strom Thurmond | 2024 State SC – and managed to keep her in check. Attacking the rim, taking care of the ball to limit turnovers and knowing when to score or pass are other key elements to her game.
Moody was in her mood on Friday morning against last season’s 1A state runner up in Denmark-Olar. The talented junior guard for the 4A Yellow Jackets concluded her day at White Knoll HS with a 20-point outing to lead Greer to a 44-33 victory over the Vikings. Denmark-Olar’s defense had little to no answers for Moody as the veteran displayed she can score at all three levels. Another aspect to Moody’s game that leaves opposing defenses guessing is how quick she is with the ball in her hand and how fast she can get from one end of the floor to the other.
Richardson’s 5A J.L. Mann assembling had a relatively down year in 2022-23 finishing 8-16. The offensive clinic unleashed by the Patriots against 4A Lancaster could be a sign that J.L. Mann could be ready to turn the corner once again. The Patriots dominated the Bruins and Richardson was the centerpiece of the team’s efforts. Richardson scored 17 points en route to victory. There was not much – if anything – Lancaster’s defense could do to contain the team’s standout sophomore whose star seems to shine brighter with every game. Richardson can log productive minutes either as a three or as a four in the frontcourt. What makes Richardson even more dangerous is she is a double-double threat on a game-by-game basis with the rebounds she hauls in not to mention she plays stellar defense. Richardson had a breakout freshman campaign and is looking to follow that up with a sophomore season on what should be an improved J.L. Mann rendition.
Grant has garnered the attention of many a Palmetto State hoops onlooker ever since she began with North Augusta as a seventh grader. Her career has blossomed to the point where she is now a state champion and has been on the radar of one Dawn Staley at South Carolina. Grant continued her superb work through the high school ranks on Friday afternoon at this year’s She Got Next Thanksgiving Tournament. The Yellow Jackets may not have got the result it was looking for against the 3A juggernaut that is Camden, but she still willed her team with an impressive 14-point performance.
For much of the game, Denmark-Olar made it close against 4A Greer even if the result was not what Walker and the Vikings were in search of. Walker still led a valiant Denmark-Olar effort by scoring 14 points. Walker is listed at 5-foot-8 and primarily plays in the backcourt as either a one or a two. She also understands that the game is played on contact and has no problems getting to the free throw line. With Denmark-Olar having graduated three seniors from last season’s team that returned to the 1A state championship, Walker will be the focal point for all things Vikings over the next two seasons.
