2021-2022 Class 3A Honors

With the 2021-2022 season having concluded on Saturday, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 3A performed this year. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2025), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won’t see Freshmen in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 3A.   MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="97241" first="Mila" last="Reynolds"], 2022, 6-2 PF, South Bend Washington H.S. A University of Maryland commit, Mila was no less than spectacular at times during her career with the Lady Panthers. She finishes with 2099 points and 990 rebounds. This season, she upped her scoring average to 21.5 points per game, and while it was her lowest rebounding average (8.1 per game) of her career, she (1) had more help from her teammates cleaning the glass, and (2) found herself playing more around the perimeter. She set single-season highs for 3-pointers attempted (156), 3-pointers made (55), and 3-point shooting percentage (35%). She is certainly an Indiana All-Star candidate as well. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="128116" first="Kynidi" last="Striverson"], 2022, 5-8 PG, Silver Creek H.S. One year ago, Kynidi helped lead the Lady Dragons to a Class 3A State Championship. I use the word ’helped’, because she had to share the spotlight at times with three graduated double-digit scorers. This season Silver Creek was still going to be good, but I’m not sure even they expected a return trip to Indianapolis. Kynidi was instrumental in that run, as she significantly increased her scoring average, she shot it better from the perimeter, and she played with much more confidence and aggression. You could also see the University of Evansville commit’s leadership and poise positively affect younger teammates. MOST IMPROVED PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="178242" first="Reagan" last="Martin"], 2023, 5-11 PF, Owen Valley H.S. Reagan is a three-year Varsity performer for Owen Valley, so her comfort level and understanding of the game were already high coming into the season. But she stood out to me because of her ability to go from being a really nice basketball player, to a go-to leader who made several more plays each game. She increased her scoring by five points per game this season, she nearly doubled her rebounding, and she more than doubled her blocked shots per game. She also knocked down 44 3-pointers...nearly twice as many as her Freshman and Sophomore years combined. She has clearly improved at both ends of the floor. COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="128150" first="Kencia" last="Levasseur"], 2022, 5-7 SF, Washington H.S. Kencia was injured during the Sectional Championship a season ago, and she was not seen again throughout the Spring and Summer months, unless she was in a walking boot cheering on her grassroots teammates. She returned to the court for the first time in November and put together a strong Senior campaign, helping the Lady Hatchets to a 22-4 season. In her four seasons at Washington, the Hatchets posted a 77-18 record, including a pair of Sectional titles. Prior to that, they had not won a Sectional since 2004. Kencia will attend Roosevelt University in Chicago, so look for her to continue being a matchup nightmare for Laker opponents. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="295770" first="Kira" last="Reynolds"], 2025, 6-3 PF, South Bend Washington H.S. Above I mentioned [player_tooltip player_id="97241" first="Mila" last="Reynolds"]’ rebounding, and little sister Kira was a big reason for that, averaging a double-double of 10.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during her rookie season. Kira also owned the paint, blocking 4.7 shots per game with her height and tremendous length. She also showcases great mobility for a frontline player, as she can get side-to-side quickly or outrun most matchups down the floor. As she ages, look for her to continue developing her face-up game and becoming a multilevel scorer. Unlike her sisters, and being just a Freshman, she has yet to commit anywhere, but she has already picked up plenty of interest.
