Here are some players who stood out during Tuesday’s CCA-Solon contest:
Levin rates as one of the state’s top players regardless of class. I’ve watched her since her freshman season, and she’s continued improving in all areas of her game. The University of Iowa pledge handles the ball well with both hands and finishes consistently at the rim following strong drives. If the defense plays penetration, she can drain it from the outside. She’s a solid defender and a strong rebounder.
Highlights
Miller impresses with her willingness to challenge taller players with aggressive takes to the basket. It produces points and free throws. She’s a good athlete with quickness, allowing her to beat most defenders off the dribble. She can stoke it from the outside when defenses sag. She plays good on-ball defense.

Kobi Lietz
Kobi Lietz
Only a sophomore, Lietz blends in well with her older Spartan teammates. She handles it really well, shows a smooth outside shot and can penetrate with a nice burst. I think her best asset right now might be her on-ball defense. And that’s always good to see from a young player.
Solon designed its game plan to stopping Locklear, a strategy she might see plenty more of this season. She still ended up 16 points and 16 rebounds. She showed a knack for handling double teams by passing to open teammates from the high and low post instead of forcing up shots with extra attention on her. She’s a powerful presence under the basket and features a silky looking shot in the mid-range.

Miller took advantage of the extra attention being paid to Locklear. The crafty senior guard recognized what Solon was doing and cashed in, netting nine of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter. She’s a solid shooter from behind the three-point arc and also drives it strong to the basket. She’s hard-nosed on defense.
The Drake University volleyball recruit who led the Clippers to the championship match at last month’s state volleyball tournament can also hoop. With Locklear being double and triple teamed, Beck dove to the the basket and finished. She netted 18 points, making nine of 10 shots from the floor. She’s a hungry rebounder and swats shots on defense with regularity.
Lower impressed the heck out of me during the volleyball season, helping Beck lead the Clippers all the way to the title match. She impressed me again in this game as a bright rising star on the hardwood. Lower is a high-level, quick-twitch athlete. On the basketball court, she features a smooth, complete game. Her shooting form is picturesque, she handles the ball with well with both hands, can get to the basket and finish, and defend and rebound with her long arms and height. The future is incredibly bright for this young lady.
