There are a lot of pressures when it comes to starting high school, and these athletes have seemed to rise to the challenge already finding ways to make strong contributions for their teams. Make sure to keep your eyes on these athletes over the next four years.
Khloe Moye is getting a lot of playing time being able to show off her range shooting the ball. She does a nice job protecting the possession using ball swings and showing her strength to make sure she gets around a defender for the pass to her teammates. She can drive to the hoop, too, finishing at the rim and even taking on contact. She’s versatile at the guard position being able to bring the ball up and run the plays or slide out to the shooting guard position to execute and score.
Highlights
Gabrielle Troy-Mebane is one of the top scorers in her conference currently as she can score on any level. She’s also one of the top assist makers showing how she facilitates the offense scoring on her own or finding the open teammate. She’s able to take advantage of how the defender guards her putting up her shot if she has some space or using their momentum against them while they close out, and she throws up a fake to get around them. She can pull up for some nice midrange jumpers, too. She’s a tough defender getting her hands involved in everything making it difficult for people to get by her.
My’Asia Young has been starting for Mallard Creek bringing a lot of tough defense on their full court press. She is constantly moving making the most out of her defensive stance to prevent their opponents from getting up the court. She can pick the pocket of a guard trying to dribble around her or jump into a passing lane for the steal. She hustles up and down the court for fast breaks, and she can definitely knock down her shot from deep.
Highlights
Camri Hobbs has been able to show more of what she can do this season with 1 of 1. She handles the ball well, and she makes great passes into her teammates on the block or flashing in the paint. She drives hard to the basket absorbing contact and making her points count. She can also step outside to knock down the three point shot. She will do the dirty work for her team, too, getting inside to grab rebounds and hustling after loose balls.
Jaida McClure has been playing at a high level for years knocking down shots from all over the court. When I say anywhere, I do truly mean anywhere being able to knock down shots from the volleyball lines at times showing how much other teams need to make adjustments when it comes to guarding her. She is exceptional at jumping into the pass with her feet ready to go right back up and shoot. She likes to push the tempo, too, finding her open teammates up the court for some fast breaks. One of her strengths may honestly be her composure because she stays calm no matter what may be happening on the court.
Kelsey Rhyne found herself in the starting lineup right from the beginning of this season, and she has certainly continued to show why with her ability to shoot from anywhere beyond the perimeter. The lefty guard finds ways to get open, and puts up the shot off the pass very easily. It doesn’t matter if defenders are close by. She has a nice reverse layup that she uses, especially when she is flashing in the paint for some points. On defense, she anticipates passes jumping into the lanes grabbing steals and immediately pushing it up the court.
