Countless prospects wowed me on the court and left me excited for their high school futures. I only had two eyes out there, but here are the girls who kept me watching all day. Ring the bell!
Rihanna Young Rihanna Young 5’7″ | CG Detroit Edison | 2027 State MI had herself an impressive day Sunday at the freshman prospect showcase. If the event did not tell you her grade you could mistake her for an upperclassmen because of how physical and strong she plays the game. The first time I saw Rihanna play was at Detroit Mercy’s Elite Camp this summer and she fit right in with top prospects. Some notes I had on her at the freshman showcase: strong drive with a right hand finish, double crossover pass, and relentless pressure. Rihanna has quickness to get to the rim and finish with either hand in traffic. She has a textbook behind the back step back (wow) and the accuracy from 3 to match her inside game. Her ability to score at all three levels, apply ball pressure, and shoot the rock will make her a must watch athlete at Edison this season. Read more about her great day here.
Elise Bullock Elise Bullock 5’5″ | PG Grass Lake | 2027 State MI excelled at the event Sunday as she showcased her two way abilities on the court. She has s poise and purpose while handling the ball and equally creates plays for herself and teammates on the floor. She has lengthy arms and uses them with her quickness to force deflections, steals, and turnovers. Elise may be a guard, but she constantly crashed the boards and scored points off rebounds. She made a full court one handed assist and forced a help defender to slide and picked up another assist in the post. Elise stole passes, dished out assists, and played some of the best two way basketball on the court Sunday. A couple notes I had on Elise: passer and passing phenom. Grass Lake will be thrilled to have her up at the HS level this season. Read more about her great day Sunday here.
Madisyn was noticed across the board by scouts and spectators at the freshman showcase, for good reason. Her nickname is “Mad Dog” and she hounded ball handlers with relentless pressure forcing steals throughout the event and had the quickness and strength to finish those plays off for points. Madisyn controlled the ball with both hands and raced it up the floor full court many times. She has elite control with her crossover and pullback dribble game and can fire passes to teammates. There weren’t many who could physically or athletically match her man to man on the court Sunday and she will be an outstanding playmaker for Hamady immediately. Read more on her impressive day here.
Highlights
Brynn Butler Brynn Butler 5’9″ | SF Jenison | 2027 State MI was an unstoppable force at the Freshman Showcase Sunday. She blocked and boarded the basketball on defense, while scoring almost at will on offense. Brynn earned extra shots at the foul line because defenders had to foul her from scoring. Her downhill finishes combined with retreat dribbles to create outside shots, make her an extremely difficult stretch big/wing for opponents to match up with. She made a huge impact on Sunday and will be a talent to watch this upcoming season for Jenison. Read more on Brynn’s performance here.
Nichole imposed her will at the Freshman Showcase on Sunday. She showed how competitive she is not only on the court, but on the bench as well by verbally encouraging and motivating her teammates. Nichole dribbles the ball well enough to bring it up the floor and is especially skilled in the high or low post with her back to the basket. She can drop step, pivot, set ball screens, roll, so on. Nichole finishes strong at the rim and her pursuit does not end until she scores so you better box out! Nichole played well on both ends of the court and will be an exciting prospect to watch moving forward for Detroit Edison. Read more about Nichole’s standout Sunday here.
Sydney Black Sydney Black 5’8″ | CG East Lansing | 2027 State MI was another two way guard who had a monster day at the Freshman Showcase. Her relentless pursuit on the offensive boards led to numerous put back and one’s. She forced turnovers with pressure on the ball and deflecting passes. I wrote down that she was a leader on defense as a primary communicator and energizer for her team. She finishes off two feet well and gets downhill fast with force. She will be a nightmare for guards to match up with this season as she joins an East Lansing team that will make some noise this season. Read more about her impressive day here.
