Players that have displayed their superior ability over the past month on the high school floor at an impressive rate. In the article below, we are going to cover five athletes who you should know for the rest of the season, if you don’t already. Each player is someone that has made a lasting impact within their program not only this season but throughout the past three years. They have stayed dedicated and because of that, their hard work is paying off.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Millard West High School is stacked with several different types of future collegiate basketball players. One that is committed to compete at the next level, while killing it so far this winter is Taylor Hansen Taylor Hansen 5’10” | PF Millard West | 2024 State NE . Hansen is a Small Forward that handles her business every time she walks on the court. She moves really well for her size and has demonstrated over the past 3 years that she is one of the more consistent producers throughout the state. To kick off this year, Hansen is taking advantage of every opportunity given and making the most of it. She is flying around the court, getting stops of the defensive end, all while being a producer offensively as well in the form of scoring, and rebounding. Millard West is going to continue their awesome season moving forward. From everything I have seen, this is a team that is going to make their case for a State Title run over the next few months. They just need to stay locked in.
Jordan Metzler Jordan Metzler 5’7″ | SG Wakefield | 2024 State NE is going to be running Track at the University of Nebraska for her collegiate career but that doesn’t mean that she can’t put together a Senior season to remember. Metzler is the do-it-all type of guard for her teams. She is at her best when the ball is in her hands to lead her offense or when the ball is rotated to her for an open shot with some space. Either way, in these situations Metzler makes it happen. To kick off this season, Metzler has done exactly what you would expect. She is scoring in waves from all three levels on offense, causing chaos defensively, and she is competing at a high rate from start to finish. When you watch a player for a long enough time, you can tell what attitude they have going into different types of contests and the attitude that Metzler has never changes. She wants to win and she will do anything to make that happen for herself and the teammates around her. I think this speaks, not only to her skill on the hardwood but her outlook on competing in general. You can tell that she wants nothing more then to be successful and that is something that everyone can respect.
Callie Ott Callie Ott 5’10” | SG Millard West | 2024 State NE is another collegiate talent on the Millard West High School team that is going to continue to produce this season, before she heads off to continue on her basketball journey. Ott has size, smarts, and athleticism. She can produce on or off of the ball and is very talented at making herself available. One of the best abilities a player can have, is availability. If you can’t get yourself or others open on a consistent basis, it’s going to be problem later down the road and Ott does a great job of making that happen. She is always flashing, cutting, or moving to open space on the floor so that she can be available to the other teammates around her. Not to mention, it can be hard to stand-out when you have other high ranking players on your roster but Ott does a great job of sticking out in her own ways. Throughout the duration of a contest against Millard West, you can tell that Ott is on the floor. That she is someone you have to pay attention to or else it could be a career night for herself. I’m excited to see how far this group can go this winter. They have all the personal and coaching, they just need to go out and turn it into a reality now.
Skutt Catholic has been on a tear to start off this 2023-2024 basketball season and there aren’t many teams that I can see slowing them down at this point. To start their year, the SkyHawks are 9-0 and they have beaten teams from several different states across the country. Their production on the floor is done by one individual that we have already listed but one other that many might not know about is Lucy Currans Lucy Currans 5’7″ | SF Skutt Catholic | 2024 State NE . Currans is an interesting prospect. She isn’t going to kill you will flashy moves but with fundamentals and coordination. The teammates around her do a good job of setting everyone else up because of how good they are but from there, that is when Curran goes to work. She makes most of her attempts near the basket, displays good knowledge of what do to when on both sides of the floor, and overall she is a team player. When you combined all of this, you get someone that everyone else on the court wants to play with for several reasons. Coming up in a week or two, Skutt will have their hardest test of the season in the form of Elkhorn North. With all things considered, this is a rivalry and the game of the year for both teams involved. How will it end up? I have a prediction but until it’s said and done, anything could happen.
Jocelyn Cheek Jocelyn Cheek 6’1″ | C Maxwell | 2024 State NE has been one of the states best kept secrets on the basketball court so far this season. Cheek, a 6’1 Center, is coordinated, balanced, and knowledgeable. Not to mention that she has a motor that will not quit. Whenever you are looking at tall – post players, their motor and speed from rim-to-rim is very important. It tells you a lot about that player, in a very small amount of time. In Cheek’s case, she is one of the hardest working and quickest players down the floor at this size that I have seen in a long time. When you take into consideration everything I have said above, you start to see as to why Cheek could produce at the collegiate level. I know that she also is coming off of a successful volleyball season so I’m not sure what her future may hold but I do know 3 or 4 schools that would love her talent on their collegiate basketball roster starting next season. She has displayed all the intangibles necessary, I just hope that continues to shine through the rest of the year.
