This game was a physical slug-fest that started off slowly before both teams got into gear. McDonogh maintained a single digit lead for most of the game before a late rally cut it to one. Sophomore Autum Fleary came up with a couple of buckets and free throws down the stretch to clinch the win for the home team, 49-42. Here are my notes.
Autumn is all the way back from whatever was wrong with her knee in the fall. She brought her usual toughness and hustle to this game and made some crucial plays down the stretch to seal the win. Her shot looks good from deep and she attacked the basket aggressively. She got after it on defense with four steals and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her game high 19 points.
Dahni had to battle in the paint all game with McDonogh’s physical frontline and held her own. She showed off excellent footwork in the paint and was a monster on the boards. She held her own on defense and set some nice screens for her teammates. She finished with 7 points and 12 rebounds.
Ava had a strong overall game and really provided some leadership when needed. Her shot wasn’t falling, but the Maryland recruit still managed to score 19 points and grab 10 rebounds while playing tough defense. I like how she kept a calm demeanor and settled the team down when necessary.
Amora was able to help keep her team competitive throughout this game. She scored 12 points, including a huge 3-pointer late in the game that cut McDonogh’s lead to one. She played aggressive defense and made some nice passes.
In her first big IAAM match-up the freshman guard more than held her own. She was under heavy pressure as soon as she checked in, but she kept her composure and kept her dribble active for the most part. As the game went on she got more and more comfortable and started asserting herself. She sank a big three pointer in the fourth quarter which really seemed to boost her confidence.
