Cassidy Danburg Cassidy Danburg 6’0″ | PF Waukee NW | 2027 State IA may only be a freshman but she is someone that everyone is going to hear about over the next few seasons because of her production from the Post position with her Waukee Northwest Team. Danburg has the mixture of strength, footwork, and knowledge of the best route to attack her opponents. On a Wolves team that has some producers at every position, Danburg is slowly showing her worth night-in and night-out. I had the chance to coach and watch Danburg at a prior PGH event. She was a player that I thought held her own in every contest under the basket. She never seemed out of rhythm and was never rushed in her actions. At this point in the season, she is making the plays that are needed to win ball games and her numbers are starting to reflect that. Watch out for her to continue on this rise moving forward to end the the 2023-2024 season.
A name that we haven’t mentioned before is Lizzy Frazell Lizzy Frazell 5’11” | CG Waverly-Shell Rock | 2027 State IA ‘s of Waverly-Shell Rock High School but she is putting on quite the season to start off her high school career. Frazell is a 5’10 – three guard and she has a flame thrower from deep when it comes to shooting the basketball. Throughout her teams first 12 games, Frazell is averaging 10.7 PPG on 46% shooting, including being an outstanding 42% from three. A jaw dropping number when you realize that Frazell currently has 98 shot attempts on the year and 70 of them are from behind the arc. Not to mention, that she is also averaging 4.5 RPG and 2.7 APG. When you take her numbers into consideration and the fact that her team is undefeated, it’s impressive. This Waverly-Shell Rock group may not be the favorite to win their class at the moment but looking at their roster on paper and I’m not sure who is going to matchup with their Post players. Starting 5’10, 6’0, and 6’1 as you’re 3, 4, and 5 players in 4A basketball isn’t normal. It’ll be interesting to see who they will have to matchup with at the State Playoff. Either way, if they want to be successful, Frazell is going to be an important piece to their puzzle.

When you are talking about Iowa City West High Girls basketball, you may hear the name Sasha Baldwin Sasha Baldwin 5’7″ | SG Iowa City West | 2027 State IA mentioned and for good reason. Baldin is a quick moving Guard with an impressive ability to shoot the basketball from behind the arc both off of the dribble or the catch. This Trojans program has a few collegiate level players as things stand and one of those players is Baldwin. Offensively she has a feel for the game that is better than most, she move effortlessly with the ball when she dribbles, and she is coordinated on almost every shot attempt she takes. Defensively, she is good at meeting her matchup prior to the ball getting there and she moves well laterally against other opposing guards who maybe able to handle at a high rate. We are halfway through the season and the Trojans are learning. They have won some important matchups to begin the year and I’m hoping they can continue on that path moving into the Playoffs. They have really good Guard play as a whole, as long as everyone does their job, they are going to be satisfied with how this season is going to end.

If I am studying players early on in their high school careers, the simple things stand out to me the most. Things like; Can a player pass with both hands? Can a player dribble with both hands? Can a player finish going either way? Does a player only attack going one way or by doing one certain move? What is that players demeanor once they make a mistake? Does that player communicate well with others? These question’s are the foundation on which an efficient basketball game is built and to start off her Freshman season, Callie Hales Callie Hales 5’8″ | PG Gilbert | 2027 State IA is checking most of these boxes. Hales is a 5’7 PG from Gilbert High School with a fast dribble, quick shot release, and great knowledge as to when she should put up a shot compared to taking an extra dribble or two. While only being half way through this season, we don’t know how this year might end but I think that Hales is going to be a productive prospect over the year of her high school career. She works hard, cares about the little things, and seems to be motivated. If she stays locked in, she could become one of the most constant producers this state has to offer from this 2027 Class at the end of the day.

These past couple of weeks Addy Wolfwinkle Addy Wolfwinkle 5’8″ | SG Cherokee Washington | 2027 State IA has taken the state by storm because of the impressive overall numbers she is putting up for her Cherokee Washington High School team. Wolfwinkle may only stand at 5’8 but she is a hustler and that has created a ton of success for herself on the hardwood. I would say her game is founded on this hard-work. She is never the player to bend over for a loose ball but more-so she is usually the one to be the first diving on the floor. Stuff like that. I haven’t had the chance to see this team compete live this season just yet but I’m going to make it a priority this last two months before the Playoffs begin. They have won most of their games and a big part of that is being of the play of Wolfwinkle. If they can stay on this trajectory, they are going to be a tough “out” during the post-season for anyone in the 3A Class.
