When I had the chance to see Maryn Franken Maryn Franken 6’0″ | SF Sioux Center | 2027 State IA last week at the State Tournament, I was thoroughly impressed with her play. Franken has always had some promise but I had a lot of questions for her coming into her Freshman season at Sioux Center High School. Well over the past few months, she answered all of those questions with flying colors, putting an exclamation point on her season with a productive State Tournament run. Franken has size, coordination, and skill. She stands at around 6’0 and moves wells down the floor. She has demonstrated the ability to score from all three levels offensively, while being a mismatch problem for most. When it comes to defense, she does a good job of holding her own and creating chaos in both the half and full court. Not to mention that she doesn’t give up easy looks and always contests a shot with an extended hand. We have seen a lot of promise out of Franken this season and I’m hoping that translates to the AAU season once again, much like it did last Spring.
Campbell Schulz Campbell Schulz 5’9″ | CG North Polk | 2027 State IA left her mark on her North Polk program as a Freshman and I wouldn’t be suprised to see that continue on into the future. Schulz works hard and always leaves it all on the floor. This season she demonstrated the she can come in and be an important piece to a successful program in more ways than one. She rebounds hard, understands when to take advantage of her opportunities, and she keeps a positive attitude when things don’t go her way, no matter what the situation may be. In this Update, Schulz didn’t move too many spots on our list but that’s okay. If she continues to work hard and demonstrates that she can make things happen, she is going to be a main option for this team over the next three seasons.
Iowa City – West always seems to put together a nice season. Doesn’t matter if they have to rely on Freshman or if they have Senior leaders, no matter what they make it work and that speaks to their system as a whole. A prospect that came in this season and showed her worth right away is Guard, Sasha Baldwin Sasha Baldwin 5’7″ | SG Iowa City West | 2027 State IA . Baldwin is crafty, quick, and she knows when she should shoot it compared to making the extra pass. Whenever we are talking about players coming in and making an instant impact, those players usually have a good head on their shoulders as the game is seen slower through their eyes. I think that’s the case here with Baldwin. She see’s situations before they happen and because of that, she finds a lot of success. Over the next three years it’ll be important that her offensive game grows to all three levels. If she can do that, I’m sure she will be fielding calls from college coaches before things are said and done with her basketball career at the high school level.
Highlights
If we learned anything about the DCG this season and their Freshman Class, it’s that Macy Meyer Macy Meyer 5’6″ | SG Dallas Center Grimes | 2027 State IA can shoot the basketball and I’m sure that is going to be her “job” over the next three years for the Mustangs. Meyer comes in with decent height, coordinated footwork coming off of screens, and the ability to put the ball in the basket from really far away. More times then not, Meyer is getting down the floor before everyone else and spotting up for a shot from deep but if someone on defense tries to over-play her, she has the ability to put the ball on the floor, getting to the midrange or even all the way to the rim. This season may of only been her first year on the Varsity floor but moving forward, she is going to have a major impact player for this program if you ask me.
Fayth Sullivan Fayth Sullivan 5’9″ | CG North Polk | 2027 State IA is another prospects from North Polk that I would advise everyone pay attention to moving into this Spring and into her Sophomore season with the Comets. Sullivan came into each game this season with a chip on her shoulder. She stepped on the floor with something to prove and because of that, she had a Freshman year to remember. She made positive plays each contest, she put up respectable numbers, and she showed off her skill/ability on more than one occasion each contest. What more can you ask for? She proved her worth almost every game and that’s about all you can ask for with a program that has some impressive upperclassmen/other players. If she stays locked in moving forward, I’m sure we are going to be hearing about her a lot more in the near future.
