The West Michigan Hoop Summit is an annual high school showcase I've been wanting to see for some time now. The stars aligned, and I was finally able to make the trip West to Aquinas College for an exciting day of Michigan girls' basketball. Five games, 10 teams, media coverage, free roster access for scouts and college coaches, concessions, and a hospitality suite; this event was well done by the host. Muskegon vs. Wayne Memorial and Grass Lake vs. East Kentwood were my two favorite games from a coach/spectator perspective. Stars and hidden gems both put their next-level abilities on display under the spotlight. Here are seven underclassmen who excelled under the spotlight.

Reese is a lefty combo-guard who excels as a facilitator and off the ball scorer. She creates separation from defenders and dribbles the ball confidently with either hand. Reese is a sharpshooter and she buried two pure corner threes. She drove downhill with a burst and scored a tough and-one layup through contact, plus the free throw. Reese swiped the ball away to score a breakaway layup, fired skip passes across the court, and crashed the glass. She led Caledonia with 11 points, grabbed five rebounds, and earned West Michigan Hoop Summit Co-MVP honors.

Kendall had a very productive day for Rockford at the West Michigan Hoop Summit. She crashed the glass to secure an offensive rebound and scored the put-back. Kendall finished inside off two feet and buried a smooth pull-up jumper from the elbow. She drove confidently off a screen with her left all the way for the layup and used great wall-up technique to block a shot. Kendall has the vision, ball-handling skill, physicality, length, and outside range to excel at guard or forward.

Myla jumped in front of a pass for the steal, took it the other way, looked off the defender, and scored the contested layup. She scanned the floor with good vision, threw strong skip passes, and hit cutters in stride. Myla communicated actively with teammates and finished well off two feet. I made note of how confident she was passing and dribbling with her off-hand. Myla made the extra passes to give teammates open looks, delivering accurate bounce passes into the low post. She worked hard to pressure the ball on defense and was an active rebounder. Myla put up a productive 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals for Caledonia at the West Michigan Hoop Summit.

Jayla is an explosive dual-threat guard who gets to the rim and can light it up from beyond the arc. Jayla drove with a burst down the baseline and scored an acrobatic mid-air finish through the defender's chest off the glass. She cut backdoor, pivoted, and scored another tough layup in traffic. Jayla finished contested shots around the basket throughout the game, attacked hard off the dribble to cause fouls, converted free throws, and buried a corner three. She earned West Michigan Hoop Summit Co-MVP honors, leading Heritage with 14 points and six rebounds.

Zariya has a unique combination of length, athleticism, mobility, and skill that makes her stand out on the court. She worked hard to keep perfect defensive positioning, denying an entry pass from one block all the way to the other. The pass was forced, and Zariya deflected the ball to pick up a steal. She blocked a shot and kicked the ball out to open shooters after penetrating off the dribble. Zariya backed down her defender, used a sudden spin move, and finished the layup off two feet. She's a Heritage prospect to keep an eye on this season.

Hadleigh is a long, physical, and skilled post prospect in the Grass Lake program with a bright future ahead of her. She used her shoulder inside to create space, ripped the ball aggressively to protect it in traffic, and grabbed rebounds with strong hands. Hadleigh worked hard in the paint and scored a tough putback through a foul. She deflected several deflections with her active hands in the passing lanes.

Kaelyn is going to be a special guard prospect in the East Kentwood basketball program. Her lateral quickness caused a travel violation, and she maintained a textbook athletic stance on defense. Kaelyn delivered a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the first quarter, scored a speedy left-handed layup in transition, and buried a jumper on the wing. She led the Falcons with 10 points and had a great day at the West Michigan Hoop Summit.
