High school girls basketball has returned for roughly a few weeks across South Carolina. And while there are plenty of teams that are separating themselves from the field, that is also the case for the state's always robust youth movement.

Already in those two weeks, we at Prep Girls Hoops have watched a number of freshmen, eighth graders and seventh graders that are playing as if they are upperclassmen.

These are names that are wasting no time in building a statewide profile. For some as they gain more experience, those names could even go national. We unveiled part one of our list of youngsters that have already turned in impressive performances with a focus on freshmen. Here is part two of said list that highlights eighth and seventh graders.

The emergence of this talented three forward out of 5A Byrnes indicates the Rebels will be in good hands for many seasons to come. We got our latest glimpse of Evans recently when Byrnes participated in the Bob Dillon Thanksgiving Invitational at Spartanburg. She had eight points in a Rebels 54-32 victory over 2A Clinton. In addition, she was in the starting five for that contest. She stands at 5-foot-8 and her versatility is one of her many strong points. In addition, Evans thrives as an attacker of the rim and is also very accurate with the passes she makes.

There are few teams throughout the state that, arguably, have made more of an early season statement than Childers' Crusaders. The team has started the 2024-25 campaign at 6-0 and one of those victories was an emphatic one at the GRAD Athletics Thanksgiving Tournament at Heathwood Hall over 1A Bamberg-Ehrhardt. The Crusaders won by a final of 59-23 and Childers was part of that offensive onslaught by scoring eight points. Childers first played in the varsity ranks last season and has excelled not only as a scorer but as a ball distributor and will collect her fair share of steals as a defender.

Unlike many tournaments where the host team is usually last on the card, 2A Manning was the first team to take the court at its M-Town Showdown. Its opponent for that contest was 3A Palmetto and the Monarchs eked out a 40-38 victory over the Mustangs to start the season. Conyers made all the difference as she led all Manning point-getters with 15 points. She played more of a five role than that of a four and utilized every bit of her 5-foot-11 stature to make plays for the Monarchs. Among the 15 she scored that game were the most important two as she connected on a go-ahead score late in the fourth which sealed the victory for Manning.

When one is able to earn herself a spot on a varsity roster as a seventh grader, that means she must be doing something correct. At the She Got Next Thanksgiving tournament, Irmo was matched up against a familiar foe – 4A Richland Northeast which was a former region rival of the Yellow Jackets when they played in 4A. Irmo picked up the victory over the Cavaliers and Singletary aided in the effort with 11 points. That performance displayed how accurate she can be from behind the 3-point line. Her overall play displays exactly why she got the blessing from her coach Trina Wagstaff to be in the starting five at the very start of her career.

Boiling Springs was one of the eight teams that participated in this year's Coach Varner Tip-Off at Woodruff. Kinard's Bulldogs had a rough go of things with losses to the host Wolverines as well as another 3A team in Broome. The seventh grader was a bright spot for Boiling Springs in the matchup with Woodruff as she scored 12 points in a narrow 41-35 defeat. Kinard displayed a willingness to fearlessly attack the rim, organize an offense in a half court set and was accurate with her attempts from long range. Kinard also understands the art of getting her teammates involved in the flow of the game. She is just now getting her first bit of experience at the high school level – games like the one with Woodruff will be wins as her career blossoms.
