Expert Analysis
Avi Burmenko | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Gabby had a strong season at Newman and earned NEPSAC Class AAA All-Star honors. She has one of the smoothest step-back three-pointers around, shifting defenders and creating plenty of space to get her shot off. With the ball in her hands she combines strength and quickness, making her extremely difficult to stop when attacking downhill. She also sees the floor very well, firing accurate passes to teammates spotting up along the perimeter or cutting to the basket.

There was so much to take in with Middleton this season. She’s the type of individual talent that can take over games with her ideal mechanics, grasp of situations/matchups and flow within the game. This season there were a lot of other areas that highlighted advancements though. Gabby was a willing passer, that shared scoring opportunities across the board, showed even more defensive promise, there was a significant effort shown towards rebounding and just generally being a better leader. Her display in overall growth could be considered a sacrifice to her scoring prowess, especially when considering how sophisticated of a playmaker she can be for herself as well as others. This is a menacing talent at the position that’s going to wreak havoc come AAU time.

The Newman star is widely recognized as one of the top talents around. Middleton showed yet again that in high leverage moments her number is the one to call. She led her team with 20 points in a comeback win at the Nickerson Tournament. The way she operates as a creating wing is a thing of pure beauty. Gabby showed poise in the pick & roll, created driving paths off favorable angles, found others after forcing the defense to shift, exerted her strength as she steered defenders where she wanted them plus Gabby was the one to hit the tough shots with heavy attention on her. Middleton was just generally taking advantage of each possession she had, especially late into the game. Middleton is dictating force to be reckoned with.

Who doesn’t know Middleton’s name in this space by now? She’s been leading many headlines and getting a lot of attention for her impressive abilities. By all accounts, Gabby is one of the most dynamic wing players in her class. Her striking game can’t be overlooked, not only for the comprehensive production, but the carefully crafted and superiorly polished technique she plays with. Due to her elite ballhandling, Gabby can carve out just about any type of space for herself. The masterful attacks are well thought-out and she’s able to be reactive to the different levels of defense after she beats the first defender. The shot-making ability is the cherry on to though. She’s been making tough shots for a while, but the efficiency now seems be a fundamental staple that’s been worked on. Gabby knows how and when exactly to raise up for her shot, avoiding defenders while seemingly feeling unaffected by contests. She has a beautiful stroke from deep that carries indispensable features that allow her to be successful. Some of these include a wider base to assist in leg power, a consistent shot-pocket and an unwavering follow-through that allows her to get a high arc on her shot.
In a recent game vs Mount Saint Charles, Gabby put up multiple staggering 3-pointers, 5 of them to be exact. They were all 3’s with defense in the vicinity, but that didn’t seem to sway any of her focus. She nailed consistent longballs with deep range and she was not hesitant one bit with the ball in her hands. This type of play from Middleton is exactly why she’s considered one of the best.

Middleton is starting to get on a roll here as the season progress. She’s played tough dogfight games early in the schedule so far, but her talent will always give Newman an opportunity. The well-blended wing brings a unique skillset of not only creating opportunities for herself and teammates, but she’s also a decisive decisionmaker with the ball in her hands. Gabby serves as an offensive initiator that can help carry a large slice of responsibility. She repeatedly shows the ability to play multiple positions to a high degree and regularly requires one of the opposing team’s best defenders to guard her. Over her last couple games, Middleton has been starting to simmer. It’s apparent she’s starting to find her groove after an impressive showing at the Girls Hoop Series where she demonstrated some tough shot making ability with awesome creation skills that opened things up for her teammates. Gabby is a prominent figure in her class and there will be a lot of eyes on her this weekend at the She Got Game Classic in New Jersey.

The Newman sophomore is one of the most prolific players in the entire class. She is the #1 player at the position. Middleton has been a familiar name in the region for years now and still sits at the top of her class to this day. Middleton is a 3-level scorer that’s a natural playmaker. Although an incredibly dynamic scoring option, Gabby uses her skills to get her teammates involved. She penetrates the lane, which makes defenders react to her and her passing expertise makes it easy to hit players directly in their spots. When in the lane, she has a great habit of probing while keeping her eyes scanning for the best play available. Another underrated quality is her ability to keep her dribble alive. Defenders will attempt to crowd Gabby or even trap because of how potent she is, but Middleton is rarely ever flustered, a;ways keeping plays alive. She keeps her poise, even in the most hectic situations. Middleton is a legitimate mismatch most times on the floor; she is too athletic for the bigger forwards who may be slower on their feet and far too strong for the small perimeter players. The defense should also be stated. She can easily switch onto guards and that previously mentioned strength allows her to stay with some bigs as well. Overall, Gabby is an outstanding talent that’s reliable on so many different levels.
