Continue ReadingWe will now stir up the amusement and entertainment and head over to the backcourt onto the talent of five point guards in the Class of 2023 that will be owning the court this summer displaying their leadership, playmaking ability, ball handling skills, and scoring capabilities. These five “junior to be” floor generals have had a significant impact at the point guard position as a high school and AAU player, and can be looked at in some ways as underrated. What they lack in size, they make up for it with pure skill, a competitive drive, a positive attitude, and a winning mentality. “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” These stock risers have what it takes to become elite basketball players at a high-level. Let’s now get down to the nitty gritty as to why these five select players are “true” point guards on the basketball court.
- Molly Joyce Molly Joyce 5'7" | PG Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State IA , 5’7, PG, Bishop Garrigan, 2023
–-Molly is a kid that thrives playing the up-tempo style of basketball. This lefty PG can make things happen in bursts, in a flash, and in a hurry. She loves the open court and transition game, and is a terrific athlete. Her quickness, speed, and athletic ability serves her well on both ends of the floor. Her ability to read the ball to pick off steals can assist any team in piling up the scoreboard. She is very instinctual, and has a ton of natural ability. She is a great 3-point shooter, and has deep range. Her quick release and form is good too. She has an outstanding handle, and can get to the rim while having the capability of finishing with both hands. I like her aggression and tenacity to finish drives and shots. Molly has great court awareness, and dishes out some good dimes to teammates. Fellow teammate Audi Crooks Audi Crooks 6'3" | C Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State #42 Nation IA and her are a good dynamic duo out on the court, playing HS and AAU ball together, so there is no doubt they know what the other one does by second nature and in a heartbeat. Expect Molly to continue to be a standout player this 2021 AAU season with the CY Select team. Enjoy!
2. Halli Poock Halli Poock 5'6" | PG Waterloo West | 2023 State IA , 5’5, PG, Waterloo West, 2023
–Halli is a kid that has quite the game going. She is a natural, highly skilled player that every coach in the country would want leading their team. She brings a fierce mentality to the table, while also having a composed and relaxed demeanour. Her PG skills are off the charts, as her vision and knack to make passes to teammates is incredible. What makes her a great point guard is her heavy scoring prowess. She can beat you in many ways. If you leave her space, she’ll drop the 3 ball on you. If you play her too close, she’ll drive by you and leave you in the dust for two off the glass. Her aggression is superb, and she can finish at the rim in many ways with both hands. She has a quick first step, so she can easily pick off steals and get in passing lanes. She is another player that makes a living in the open court and transition game. Halli plays on an extremely stacked Waterloo West HS team, and her and fellow teammate Sahara Williams Sahara Williams 5'11" | SF Waterloo West | 2023 State IA can rack the points up, as they also play AAU ball together. Halli is an elite level prospect that will be a great college baller. With her height frame at 5’5, there is some question there with that lack of size, however, that really isn’t an issue whatsoever as she has the talent and athleticism to make up for it. Expect her to continue to make that high-level collegiate presence known this 2021 AAU season with the All Iowa Attack team. Enjoy!
3. Jasmine Barney Jasmine Barney 5'7" | PG Cedar Falls | 2023 State IA , 5’7, PG, Cedar Falls, 2023
–Jasmine is a kid that is the definition of an exciting and fun player to watch. Her athletic ability is second to none, and she surely uses it to her advantage. What I first noticed about her that caught my eye was her ability to take the ball off the bounce and hit the pull-up jumper in the lane with magnificent body control. Her quick first step is displayed both on the offensive and defensive end. Jasmine is another player that takes over the open court and transition game and spends a good amount of time getting into passing lanes stealing the ball. Her 3-point shot is great, and she can hit shots from every spot on the floor, while also having range. She can get to the rim and finish with both hands too. I like her basketball IQ and her passing ability as well. The younger sister of Kiana Barney, a current player at the University of Northern Iowa, Jasmine has the potential to follow in her older sister’s footsteps and accomplish the same goal of playing at a high-level. A lot of good things to come as her career goes on. Expect to see her continue to show out this 2021 AAU season with the Lady Martin Brothers team. Enjoy!
4. Jaeden Ferris Jaeden Ferris 5'8" | PG Westwood | 2023 State IA , 5’8, PG, Westwood, 2023
–Jaeden is a kid that has a good feel for the game and can score the basketball at will. Her ability to drive to the basket makes her a lethal offensive player. I love her runner in the lane, and she also can hit the pull-up jumper off the bounce off of two. She is a good finisher at the rim, and can finish with both hands. She also has a good 3-point shot, and can stretch the defense with range. Jaeden is an excellent passer and has a high basketball IQ. She has the athleticism to get into passing lanes and get many steals. Her aggression and tenacity is very evident on both ends of the floor. She takes command of the game, and has tremendous leadership skills. She has the guard skills to slide over to the two guard position and be a threat out on the wing. A versatile player that can make some noise possession after posssesion with her talent. Expect her to continue to evolve and raise her stock this 2021 AAU season with the South Dakota Attack team. Enjoy!
5. Quinn Grubbs Quinn Grubbs 5'5" | PG Exira EHK | 2023 State IA , 5’5, PG, Exira EHK, 2023
–Quinn is a kid that has a solid skillset and can score the basketball in a variety of ways. She is another tremendous athlete, and can have a total impact on both ends of the floor. She is a great 3-point shooter with good range. Her quick first step allows her to put points on the board, as she can get to the rim and finish with both hands. Her energy on defense brings havoc to opposing teams, as she can get her hands on passes and pick off the steals. Quinn is a good floor general, displays a high basketball IQ, and can pitch off some great dimes to teammates. This past March, she was named to the Class 1A IGHSAU State All-Tournament team. This proves her leadership, as well as her talent to be named to this select group of players. Expect her to continue to elevate her game and make a name for herself this 2021 AAU season with the CY Select team. Enjoy!
