With most of our coverage hovering around high schoolers, there are many new faces and opportunities for freshmen to capture the spotlight for the first time at these big tournaments. A few of these freshmen blew me away for the first time, and others built upon the foundation they’d laid earlier in the high school and travel seasons. Here are a few 2027 prospects who grabbed my attention with their excellent play on Saturday.
Avery Hannah Avery Hannah 5’8″ | CG Haslett | 2027 State MI was in the zone from beyond the arc for Mystics 27-S40 on Saturday at the April Showers Classic. She exited the game to bandage her index finger and then returned to inflict injury on the opposing team with her offensive explosion. Avery hit a ridiculous 6 three’s including one while being fouled on a closeout attempt (made the FT too). She had the crowd, opposing team, and me in complete disbelief by the number of 3’s she kept hitting in a row and thankfully I was there to see it happen!

Leigha Roberson Leigha Roberson PF Portland | 2027 State MI continues to control the paint for Michigan Drive Premier 15U-Hutson, impressing once again at the April Showers Classic on Saturday. She was a rebounding machine on both ends and used her physical strength to battle against challenging forwards. Leigha converted an impressive up and under pivot move in the paint to score and has advanced hands to catch passes inside. She keeps her eyes on the ball defensively and causes turnovers in the paint.

Jozelynn Begick Jozelynn Begick 5’10” | SG Freeland | 2027 State MI is a lengthy prospect for Mystics 27-S40 who competed at a high level on Saturday at the April Showers Classic. She knocked down multiple 3’s outside and used a quick sweep to beat her defender on a drive to the basket and draw a foul. Jozelynn uses her athleticism and length on defense, high pointing a shot and swatting it out of the air.

Harper Backus Harper Backus 6’2″ | C Dexter | 2027 State MI is a post prospect for Mystics 27-S40 who showed her dynamic skillset on Saturday at the April Showers Classic. She played a strong, physical game inside and boxed out her opponent to secure rebounds. Harper sealed off her defender with a strong stance with her hand up for an easy entry pass and finish off the glass. She finished a layup in transition and showed her shooting range by knocking down a 3 from the wing. Harper impressed by challenging shot attempts with a high-handed closeout and played an outstanding game.
Reese Lape
Reese Lape
Reese Lape has physical strength and athleticism that few 2027 prospects do. She put those attributes on full display for Mystics 15U UA Rise at the April Showers Classic on Saturday. Reese attacked downhill on her drives using inside out dribbles and powers into the defense to create a shooting fouls. She used a skilled euro-step move to finish at the rim and forced turnovers on defense using her quickness to create steals. Reese has the athletic frame and skill-set to be a next level prospect as she continues to fine tune her game.

Bradie Lehman Bradie Lehman PG Concord | 2027 State MI played exceptional basketball for Mystics 15U UA Rise on Saturday at the April Showers Classic. Her aggressive drives downhill opened up scoring opportunities for the team. Bradie read the defense well, driving fearlessly into contact to draw fouls, but also jumping up to make an assist over a defender in the paint.
