The featured image is of [player_tooltip player_id='884434' first='Carly' last='Senour'] (2026) of Rushville Consolidated High School.

As we enter the third week of official IHSAA games, I wanted to take the time to preview the season Sectional by Sectional. In the past, I have typically started in Class 1A and moved up, but this season I started with Class 4A instead. Additionally, during the Spring, the IHSAA moved to a traditional enrollment-based format, realigning all classes with hard enrollment cutoff lines per class instead of taking nearly 400 schools and simply dividing them into four equal classes. With that said, each class should be more competitive, but the bigger classes will have fewer teams than the smaller classes. This article serves as the 13th of 24, previewing each Sectional in the state. In this specific article, I will take a look at Class 3A, Sectional #27 and Sectional #28. Below is a look at the teams in each of those Sectionals, along with some general comments and analysis.
(SAG = Final 2023-2024 Multiclass Sagarin Rating (394 teams); SOS = Final 2023-2024 Strength of Schedule)

.

Sectional #27 at Northview
Northview (20-5), SAG 136, SOS 272
Cascade (13-11), SAG 142, SOS 167
Speedway (16-8), SAG 197, SOS 302
Edgewood (15-10), SAG 208, SOS 220
Owen Valley (6-19), SAG 287, SOS 255
George Washington (6-13), SAG 374, SOS 383

Northview is coming off of a 20-win season, they've strengthened their schedule a little, and they are seeking their first Sectional title since 2018-2019. Last season they fell to Indian Creek, but the Braves are now in Sectional #28 (below). As for the Lady Knights, they graduated just one player, Brooklyn Eldridge (1.3p, 2.9r), but Juniors Maggie Krause (2.5p in 11 games) and Addy Spetter (0.8p in 9 games) are not listed on their online roster. Still, a majority of their production returns, including 6-0 Senior forward [player_tooltip player_id='570371' first='Brynlee' last='Clarke'] (17.4p, 5.6r), 5-9 Sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='834965' first='Carlee' last='Schrader'] (10.0p, 4.0r, 2.8a, 3.2s), and 5-5 Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='486472' first='Reagin' last='White'] (9.5p, 3.6r, 4.6a, 2.1s). Clarke is an athletically built kid who can run & jump a little, plus she has nice face-up skill. Schrader is a versatile guard who can handle and create or knock down open shots. White is little, but she's very feisty, hard-working, and a dangerous perimeter shooter. Those three will draw a lot of attention, but 5-6 Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='874344' first='Brenna' last='Stallcop'] (6.0p, 2.5r), Sophomore guard Tori Dehart (2.3p), and 5-2 Senior guard Delana White (2.3p) play off of them well. In addition, 5-8 Senior forward Rachel Rounds (1.5p), 6-1 Junior post Rori Dowell (1.5p), and 5-2 Junior guard Rekell Terrell (1.3p, 3.4r) have seen their share of Varsity action. With that much experience returning, look for the Knights to be a legitimate contender when February rolls around. Cascade looks to the remains of a 7-player rotation this year, but they did graduate three, including their top two scorers. Creedance Chittenden (9.5p, 3.2r, 2.7a, 2.6s), Liviair Campbell (9.9p, 4.4r), and Claire Austin (4.1p, 5.6r) accepted their diplomas in the Spring, but there are some talented ladies left who are champing at the bit for their turn to star. 5-10 Senior forward [player_tooltip player_id='1122721' first='Lilly' last='Hall'] (9.1p, 5.1r) is a long, wiry, inside-out forward who can play effectively in the mid-post or play a little around the perimeter. She is joined in the lineup by 5-9 Senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='1122841' first='Chloe' last='Smith'] (9.0p, 2.6r, 2.4a), another long athlete who can knock down open shots or make plays off the bounce like a point forward. 5-9 Junior forward Macey Pugh (6.8p, 3.9r) adds more rebounding and interior play, while 5-6 Senior guard Kaylee Austin (6.3p, 2.3r) can run offense while on the ball, or knock down shots off the ball. Who steps up to add depth this year will be key as well but look for a Freshman trio of 5-6 guard Addy Thompson, 5-7 guard Taylor Gibbs, and 5-5 guard Regan Franklin to get first crack at it. Cascade will likely maintain a winning record, but how many wins will be determined by how quickly the returnees and the rookies can mesh together.

The Speedway Sparkplugs have one of the more unique nicknames in the basketball world, but after graduating their top two scorers and five 2024s in total, they can definitely use a spark. Graduating this Spring were Alex DeLisle (12.4p, 8.5r, 2.2s), Daniella Galvez (11.2p, 6.5r, 2.8a, 2.6s), Reagan Hendry (3.8p, 2.5r), Audrey Burrell (3.2p, 3.7r), and Chloe Ellett (2.0p, 2.5a). Additionally, 5-10 Senior Genesis Austin (5.8p, 4.3r) is no longer on the roster. That leaves a mostly young and inexperienced group, but a tall, talented selection of newcomers adds hope as well. Key returnees include 5-8 Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='492318' first='Macy' last='DeLisle'] (4.8p), 5-9 Senior guard Mylie Walton (3.3p), and 6-0 Junior post Hayli Clampitt (2.7p, 3.6r). The best of the newcomers, however, could be the new team leader in many statistical categories, and that is 5-11 Freshman wing [player_tooltip player_id='884402' first='Madelynn' last='Matelic']. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and she has ball skill and touch outside. As she adapts to the physicality of the Varsity game, she could be a star for the Sparkplugs sooner rather than later. 6-2 Freshman post Shavaun Champion is another intriguing youngster who flashes potential, while 6-0 Sophomore Addison Haberman-Smith is another prospect new to Varsity who adds size and a lot of upside to help contribute. Obviously, Speedway isn't lacking for size, and as they gain experience, they could be a problem to deal with. Whether or not they can handle the pressures of February as a young group will be key. Edgewood is set up to have a really nice season, as they return their top four players, plus they have a number of other ladies who have logged Varsity minutes. 5-11 Junior wing [player_tooltip player_id='832680' first='Macey' last='Crider'] (13.4p, 5.6r) is healthy, and that's huge considering she's missed some time throughout her career. She is strong, skilled, and has a natural feel for the game. Twin guards Madison Bland (8.8p, 5.6r, 3.7a, 2.1s), a 5-3 Junior, and Allison Bland (8.3p, 3.5r, 2.8a, 2.3s), a 5-2 Junior, share backcourt responsibilities and cause headaches for opposing coaches. Madison is a point guard who can score, while Allison is more of a scorer who can play point at times. 5-9 Junior forward [player_tooltip player_id='874341' first='Ava' last='Laroche'] (4.9p, 2.9r) is another returning starter with a lot of experience. Just in those four players alone, the Mustangs have quite an advantage, but 5-6 Junior guard Kyleigh Murphy (1.2p) and 5-6 Junior wing Addison Yearby (0.9p) have seen their share of action as well and help to make up a 2026 class that might see as many as 10 Juniors suit up this season. 5-11 Juniors Olivia Edgeman and Kaitlyn Wright represent any size the Mustangs have inside, so look for them to split minutes in the post, unless one begins to stand out over the other. If Edgewood continues to get production out of Crider and the twins, plus they get solid rotation play, they could win close to 20 games this season and a Sectional #27 title.

It's sort of good news, bad news, for the Owen Valley Patriots. The bad news is they haven't had a winning season since 2018-2019, and they had to say "goodbye" to graduates Taylor Monroe (7.6p, 5.6r), Taylor York (7.1p, 5.3r), and Lily Smith (3.6p). The good news is they return their leading scorer, two additional starters, and they welcome in a talented Freshman who could help them get back to their winning ways and eventually compete for Sectional titles once again. 5-4 Sophomore guard Hannah Bixler (8.8p, 3.2r) stepped up last year and became the focal point of the offense at times. She could be a double-figure scorer in year-2. Fellow Juniors [player_tooltip player_id='874345' first='Mallory' last='Owen'] (6.0p, 6.7r), a 5-8 forward, and Cami King (4.0p), a guard, saw significant playing time as Sophomores and should be more comfortable this season. Senior guard Kalyn Greene (4.4p, 4.5r) could also be in line to start at point guard. But 5-7 Freshman guard [player_tooltip player_id='1144654' first='Aubrey' last='Sparks'] is a welcomed addition who has the potential to be a stat sheet stuffer for the Patriots right out of the gate. She is a talented scorer who willingly rebounds and defends. With Bixler and Sparks together, they could feed off of each other and give opponents real problems. One thing is certain, though... Owen Valley is trending up this year. Indianapolis' George Washington is looking to improve upon last season, and that could be difficult with the loss of forward Malaysha Flanagan (14.8p) to graduation. She was also a double-digit rebounder. Talaya Peterson (5.3p), Shamya Orr (3.5p), and six other ladies graduated as well. 5-7 Senior guard Michelle Martin (5.6p) and 5-9 Senior forward Ele'jah Smith (3.8p) are the two most experienced Continentals heading into this season. I'd look for Martin to be a near double-figure scorer as well. From there, it will likely be an open tryout to figure out the remainder of the rotation, as several other girls saw a few minutes here and there, plus as many as three true Freshman could see the floor early this season. Getting to 10 wins will be extremely tough on Washington this season, but matching their six wins from a year ago could make for a nice season with as much inexperience as they will put on the floor to begin the year.

.

Sectional #28 at Indian Creek
Roncalli (13-9), SAG 40, SOS 27
Indian Creek (21-5), SAG 45, SOS 171
Shelbyville (15-8), SAG 74, SOS 133
New Palestine (14-11), SAG 94, SOS 63
Rushville Consolidated (7-18), SAG 215, SOS 70
Greenwood Community (6-17), SAG 227, SOS 39
Beech Grove (14-9), SAG 237, SOS 299

Sectional #28 is one of the more competitive, under-the-radar Sectionals in the state. Roncalli, Shelbyville, New Palestine, and Greenwood were actually in Class 4A last year, but all dropped down after realignment. Roncalli could really take advantage of the drop in class, but they must do so without graduates Taylor Turk (9.5p, 5.4r), Claire Lindsey (8.0p, 4.2r, 4.4a), Jasmine Horsman (1.9p, 3.4r), plus three more 2024s. 5-9 Sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='716615' first='Elliot' last='Leffler'] (13.0p, 5.0r), 5-4 Senior point guard [player_tooltip player_id='296265' first='Sara' last='Rosko'] (8.4p, 2.6r, 2.2a), and 5-6 Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='486513' first='Brennah' last='Cerny'] (6.4p, 2.4r) return to bring some consistency to the backcourt. Leffler had an outstanding rookie year and could score closer to 20 points per game this season. 5-7 Freshman wing [player_tooltip player_id='984355' first='Lola' last='Morelli'] flashed some talent at a couple of Fall showcase events and should play early, while 5-1 Junior point guard [player_tooltip player_id='421106' first='Catie' last='Rosko'] returns after missing much of last season. 5-5 Senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='376911' first='Kalise' last='Gutierrez'] should add a little more Senior leadership to the backcourt mix. 6-1 Junior post Lydia Stahley (5.4p, 4.2r) offers the Royals some size on an otherwise short team. 6-1 Sophomore post Caroline Schoettle and 5-11 Freshman forward Ava Stone are Varsity newcomers who bring additional size to the frontcourt. If Roncalli can get some production up front and compete on the boards each game, they have the guard play to stand out at the Class 3A level. With graduated 2024 Indiana All-Star Faith Wiseman (18.2p, 11.9r, 4.8a, 3.9b) in the lineup the last four years, Indian Creek collected four Sectional titles, a Regional title, and amassed a record of 87-19 overall. But the 6-4 forward is gone, along with highly productive guard Lauren Foster (16.4p, 4.4r, 5.5a, 2.6s) and Olivia Pendleton (3.1p, 2.0a), so the Lady Braves will take on a new identity in 2024-2025. However, they do return some talented players with experience, so look for others to now step up. 5-6 Senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='506021' first='Ayla' last='Lollar'] (11.0p, 2.8a, 2.6s) should increase her scoring a bit, plus she's steady and confident on the ball. 6-0 Junior forward [player_tooltip player_id='1131993' first='Alexa' last='Sichting'] (6.1p, 5.3r) will likely now play a bigger role inside with Wiseman gone, and she has shown flashes of star potential. 5-6 Senior guard Jasmine Day (4.4p, 2.6r, 2.5a, 2.0s) stepped up at times last year and now looks for a starting role. 6-1 Sophomore forward [player_tooltip player_id='751055' first='Ellie' last='Oliver'] (4.2p, 2.2r), 5-8 Senior guard Bre Gault (3.9p, 2.4r, 2.7a, 3.4s), and 5-7 Junior guard Reese Tunell (1.8p) have contributed to varying degrees in the past, and now all three look to be consistent rotation players. 5-7 Freshman point guard [player_tooltip player_id='1225046' first='Reagan' last='Ferris'] has flashed strong play at her age level, and she should be a part of the core, if not step into the starting lineup at some point. Wiseman and Foster were huge losses, without question, but Indian Creek still has enough talent to win their fifth consecutive Sectional title.

After a string of six consecutive losing seasons, the Shelbyville Golden Bears have won 15 games each of the past two years, and they return enough of a roster to reach double-figure wins once again. However, productive forward Ava.Wilson (20.5p, 5.3r, 3.8s) has graduated, as have Ella Johnson (5.9p, 10.1r), Ellie Simpson (3.3p, 3.4r, 2.1s), Lilly Marshall (1.9p, 2.0r), and Lilly Johnson (1.1p). Now, the Golden Bears turn to a pair of Juniors with significant Varsity experience. Guards [player_tooltip player_id='486504' first='Ellie' last='Keller'] (8.7p, 2.9r, 2.2s) and Hannah Baker (8.1p, 3.4r) lead the charge this season. They get help from Sophomore Addy Marshall (2.0p), who saw rotation minutes in 2023-2024 and looks for a much bigger role this year. Beyond that, a solid Junior group of guard Sophia Asher, forward [player_tooltip player_id='885587' first='Reese' last='Fortune'], guard [player_tooltip player_id='1005170' first='Savannah' last='Collins'], and wing Maddy Jones look to step up after minimal experience...none of the four saw action in more than seven games last season. 5-10 Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1144618' first='Jayla' last='Ash'] could see an opportunity early along the frontline, but all in all, the Golden Bears will need some new faces in big-time roles moving forward. Without a Gizzi on the roster for the first time in six years, the Dragons of New Palestine won 14 games and nearly snagged a Sectional title as well in 2023-2024. This year, they deal with some graduation losses, but it opens the door for a pair of talented Freshmen. Gone are multisport talents Allie Blum (17.0p, 5.0r, 2.5a, 3.6s) and Vivian Miller (11.2p, 4.0r, 3.6a, 2.2s), otherwise known as their backcourt. 5-9 Junior forward Sadey Hughbanks (6.9p, 4.7r), 5-6 Senior forward Kylee Beranek (4.0p, 3.3r), and 5-7 Junior forward Kenna Tweedy (3.9p, 2.9r) lead the Dragons with frontcourt stability. 5-6 Junior guard Kendra Moore (4.2p, 2.6r) does have backcourt experience and should step into more of a leadership role from there this season. 6-2 post [player_tooltip player_id='928927' first='Allyson' last='White'] (0.4p in 14 games) played sparingly last year, but she has height, length, and athleticism, and she could provide a bigger role this time around. However, I fully expect New Palestine to incorporate 5-7 Freshman point guard [player_tooltip player_id='916552' first='Haven' last='Flagle'] and 5-8 wing [player_tooltip player_id='992221' first='Brooklyn' last='Crim'] immediately. Both are strong for their age and mature with their games. They should be able to handle the physicality of the Varsity game, while also being productive. If this new group of Dragons can bond quickly, look for New Palestine to again be in Sectional title contention.

The Rushville Lions really struggled for offense a season ago, scoring just 36.5 points per game. But while they graduated five 2024s, including Kylee Herbert (4.7p) and Kiley Parsley (3.2p, 2.4r), they return the top of their rotation. 5-8 Senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='570387' first='Leonie' last='Boyer'] (13.8p, 8.1r) should lead the way once again. She is hard-working, tough-nosed, and skilled around the perimeter. 5-5 Junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='884434' first='Carly' last='Senour'] (5.1p) is another tough player with a strong work ethic. She had a really nice grassroots season. 5-7 Senior guard Gracie Buzzard (4.7p, 2.6r) and 5-3 Senior guard Trisha Morgan (3.9p) also return experience, and 5-9 Junior forward Makenna Ripberger (0.5) saw limited action but played in 24 games. To add depth this year, look for the Lions to call upon 5-9 Senior front-liner Audrey Angle to provide interior scoring and rebounding, while 5-7 Sophomore Kelsey Morgan and 5-2 Junior guard Mikayla Herbert should help with depth off the bench. Rushville isn't very tall, but if they can get Boyer clicking, another player or two around double figures in scoring, and not get overly outmatched size-wise each game, I think they can eclipse 10 wins if not approach a winning record this year. Greenwood looks to improve upon it's 6-win season from 2023-2024, but leading scorer Charlee Mayo (10.1p, 2.1r), Breanna Pierce (4.2p, 2.2r), and three other 2024s graduated. Still, though, there is enough in the cupboard to match last season, if not improve. 6-0 Senior post [player_tooltip player_id='828091' first='Emma' last='Gardner'] (6.5p, 6.4r) has shown flashes of potentially being a double-double threat. 5-5 Senior guard Keyara Johnson (5.6p) has always been a grassroots kid who has potential as a small college prospect as well. If those two can step up, and they can get increased production from letter-winners like 5-5 Junior guard Eliana Anderson (3.3p), 5-8 Senior forward Isabelle Reynolds (2.8p, 4.8r), and 5-9 Senior forward Olivia Ford (2.3p), then they could be pretty solid this year. Also, look for Varsity newcomer Zaire Gillis, a Junior guard, to get a look early this season. Beech Grove rattled off 14 wins in 2023-2024, and they could be a "sleeper" team to compete for Sectional #28, as they return all but two 2024s who played minimal roles. 5-11 Senior forward [player_tooltip player_id='923145' first='Mylee' last='Boling'] (14.7p, 10.8r, 3.0s) has been a Varsity regular the last couple of seasons, and the walking double-double returns to lead the Hornets once again. Sophomores [player_tooltip player_id='834957' first='Harper' last='Moore'] (12.5p, 5.5r, 3.2a, 2.9s), a 5-8 point guard, and Mariyah Marshall (7.3p, 3.3r, 2.0s), a 5-6 guard, handled backcourt duties last season and learned "on the fly" as they both took their lumps but also improved. Look for each of them to be even more dynamic in 2024-2025. 5-9 Senior guard [player_tooltip player_id='883199' first='Emma' last='Micks'] (4.5p) and 5-3 Senior guard Joslyn Johnson (3.2p) offer backcourt support, as does 5-3 Sophomore guard Lyla Muffler-Challis (1.7p). That kind of rotation could give Beech Grove an advantage in setting tempo, especially with a couple of them being 5-8 and 5-9 and able to defend bigger positions. 5-10 Senior post Jess Scott and 5-5 Sophomore Layla Cranfil played a handful of minutes spread over 14 games, but should have more opportunity this season, as should Varsity newcomers Bre Veal, a 5-2 Senior guard, and Alexys Turner, a 5-11 Senior post. If Scott and/or Turner can step up and help Boling inside, especially during times of foul trouble, etc., then the Hornets could have enough depth to outlast many opponents and compete for a Sectional #28 title.
