PGH Freshman Showcase: Team 1 Evaluations

The 2029 Freshman Showcase brought together 93 rising prospects on August 30th, 2025, for a jam-packed four hours of high-level competition. The event featured a mix of predetermined 3v3 and 5v5 matchups, allowing players to showcase their skills in various game settings. One of the things that sets Prep Girls Hoops showcases apart is that every participant receives individual write-ups — a rare and valuable opportunity for these young athletes. My coverage focused on Teams 1, 2, 7, 9, and 10. Below are some standout highlights and evaluations for each player from Team 1!    Nia set the tone for Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase with her up-tempo style, pushing the pace in transition and making sharp, timely passes to teammates on the move. She handled the ball with confidence, knocked down a smooth corner three, and showcased her strength at the rim with an impressive and-one finish. Her ability to play fast while staying in control made her a clear standout.     Abrie brought steady guard play to Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, using her quick hands and sharp awareness to disrupt opposing ball handlers on defense. She also had a strong drive where she showed control and toughness, finishing through contact at the rim. Her poise and defensive energy gave her team a lift throughout the day.     Malia used her quick first step to consistently create separation off the dribble at the PGH Freshman Showcase, getting into the paint and finishing well around the rim. She showed a great nose for the ball, crashing the glass from the guard spot and converting second-chance points on offensive rebounds. Her ability to attack off the bounce and stay active made her a reliable scoring option for Team 1.     Lyla brought energy and shot-making to Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, knocking down multiple threes with confidence and consistent shooting form. She sprinted the floor in transition, creating easy scoring chances by staying active and aware. On defense, her scrappy approach and willingness to get into passing lanes added value on both ends.     Kelsey brought hustle and toughness to Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, battling on the boards and grabbing several offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive. She made a heads-up defensive play by snagging a steal and quickly starting the break with a sharp outlet pass. Her effort and awareness stood out in the flow of the game.     Rayonna showed a well-rounded game for Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, connecting from deep and delivering crisp passes to keep the offense moving. She played with physicality on both ends, finishing through contact in the paint and holding her ground as a tough, disciplined defender. Her blend of skill and strength added a strong presence on the floor.     Addison made her mark on the defensive end for Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, using quick hands to come up with multiple steals and applying steady pressure on the perimeter. Despite being a guard, she battled relentlessly on the boards, pulling down several offensive rebounds to give her team extra possessions. She also came up with a strong block, showing her toughness and willingness to do the dirty work.     Olivia-Jo (OJ) was a standout performer for Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, making an impact from start to finish with her athleticism and confident playmaking. She used a sharp crossover to shake defenders and showed impressive poise while creating scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. OJ attacked the basket with control and got to the rim consistently, putting constant pressure on the defense.     Riley consistently made strong moves to the basket for Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, converting several finishes around the rim with skill and determination. Defensively, she displayed quick hands, picking off multiple steals to disrupt the opposition. She also showed confidence from deep, knocking down a deep three from the top of the key with ease.     Tiana battled tirelessly on the boards for Team 1 at the PGH Freshman Showcase, securing multiple offensive rebounds and giving her team extra opportunities. She showed great hustle by diving for loose balls and never shying away from the physical play. Offensively, she demonstrated her shooting ability by confidently knocking down a three from the wing.
