The fall rankings updates and 2029 class watch list was released in September. Ahead of the 2025-2026 season's December start it is time to take a step back and revisit the Wichita area's all-class top ten. Over the years that I have released a top ten this list was easily the most difficult to compile. Many underclassmen could have made this list. Graduation removed half of last year's members, three of whom are either playing NCAA D I or NJCAA D I basketball. For the five returners, a large pool of young talent has shown up to challenge for a top ten spot. Take a look at the updated list ahead of the first tip off.

After slotting at #4 ahead of last season Askew claims the top spot in the Wichita area top ten. In her two years at Derby she and the Panthers reached the final four of the 2024 6A state tournament and dropped the championship game last season to Blue Valley North. Askew's game has always be marked by her fluidness, smarts and athleticism with an inside-out game. What she has added is pure power forward toughness and ferocity. One of the most difficult players in the state to match up with. The two-time AVCTL Div I first team and 2025 defensive player of the year was a consensus first or second team selection by KBCA, KSHSAACovered and SIK. Read more about her below.

A mark of a great point guard is presence. While not a demonstrative player Szabo directs her team with confidence. A great shooter with range, strong handles and quickness she advances three spots to #2. Szabo holds a few NCAA Div I offers including from Wichita State. The Fire routinely battle NJCAA and NAIA JV teams as well as private, KSHSAA and high schools from other states.

After being named Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League honorable mention in 2024 she exploded into being the league POY and was a unanimous 1st team selection by KBCA, KSHSAACovered. She averaged 17 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.4 steals. She also had a solid assists-to-turnovers ratio of just over 2. Shooting 53% from inside the arc she buried 58 threes on 40% shooting. Not only did she pick up Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League D I first team honors last season she also picked up 5A second, third or honorable mention honors by KBCA; KSHSAACovered and SIK. A steady, high motor competitor on both ends Brunton is always capable of putting up double-double numbers every night.
Thompson has made first team all-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League and all state teams for the past two seasons. Two years ago at 4A McPherson then at 5A Maize South last season. The athletic, quick and lengthy guard is a pure thief on the floor. I have seen her combines instincts, quick hands with her length to generate 6-8 steals in a game several times. A fluid scorer in a variety of situations Thompson is adept at using her handles to split defenders to finish at speed. At minimum she holds an offer from University of Nebraska-Kearney. Thompson debuts at #10.
