As the 2026 grassroots basketball season continues, we at Prep Girls Hoops figured it was an opportune time to partake in a bit of fine-tuning of our 2028 rankings.

For those that remember this past year's state championship season, there were plenty of noteworthy performances from sophomores that were instrumental in leading their teams to wins in late February and early March.

Among the changes in our latest 2028 rankings were many point guards and shooting guards that made moves up. Without further ado, we spotlight those backcourt beasts that did indeed rise up the rankings of our soon-to-be rising juniors.

Following this past season with SCISA 4A First Baptist, Pojani can proudly say that she has participated in two state championship games – and won one of them. She led coach Presley Singleton's Hurricanes to its first state title since 1980 and was one of the top performers at the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit's Southeast Kickoff in North Carolina. She wore the [program_tooltip program_id='988463' first='Mosch' last='Ball'] uniform at the Circuit event and is now wearing the FBC Reign 2028 uniform for the bulk of her grassroots schedule. Pojani played in 35 games this past season for First Baptist and averaged 22.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.3 steals and 3.7 assists per contest.

For both years that there was a 5A Division 2 classification, Berkeley was the team to beat. Carter was at the nucleus of two of coach Crystal Peace's Stags teams that claimed state championship. Back in early March, Berkeley defended its 5A Division 2 crown against a tough out in Greenville and she willed her team to victory to the tune of a 29-point outburst. A few weeks after the Stags repeated as state champions, Carter was rewarded with an offer from Minnesota North College. She averaged 13.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals in the 28 games that she played.

Prior to the 2025-26 season, Caldwell's transfer to 2A Landrum was one of the signature moves of the offseason. The move led to coach Kali Koenig's Cardinals striking championship paydirt at Colonial Life Arena in the 2A state game with Atlantic Collegiate. Caldwell put together a stellar performance under Columbia's bright lights with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Landrum to its first-ever state crown. Landrum concluded its 2025-26 season with a 25-7 record. Caldwell played in all 32 games for the Cardinals and averaged 20.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 4.6 steals, 3.9 assists and 2.4 blocks per contest.

In early March at Colonial Life Arena, Wando's 5A Division 1 state contest against Blythewood may have resulted in the Bengals winning back-to-back state crowns, but Reynolds put forth a winning effort. She led her Warriors assembling with a 19-point performance at state – including 17 in the first half. With the 2025-26 season in the rear-view mirror for the Warriors, she is running with [program_tooltip program_id='988463' first='Mosch' last='Ball'] on the grassroots circuit – including the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit's Southeast Kickoff in North Carolina back in late March.
After a 2024-25 season that saw Atlantic Collegiate finish 11-13, the Armada was looking to take that next step to solidify contender status. Landing a marquee transfer such as Capers will do just that. Capers proved to be a key factor in Atlantic Collegiate winning this past season's 2A Lower State championship in only its third season as a program. A stalwart in the Armada's backcourt, Capers would play in 24 of Atlantic Collegiate's games for a team that finished 23-3 this past season. She would average a robust 13.4 points and 1.4 steals per contest. Capers was one of five 2028s on this past season's Armada assembling.

Not only did Robinson lead the team in points per game but she was second among this past season's Rams in assists and steals per matchup. Robinson would average 15.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.7 assists per contest. When the 2026-27 season commences, Chesterfield will have moved down in classification from 2A to 1A.
The move up from 3A to 4A for Beaufort has produced mostly fruitful results for the Eagles. Last season, Beaufort concluded its 2025-26 campaign with an overall record of 21-5 plus going a perfect 10-0 to win its region. Hayward would wear the Eagles uniform in all 26 of those contests and would average a team-leading 20 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 steals (also a team-leading statistic) and 3.2 assists (also a team-leading statistic) per matchup. Hayward played a major part in Beaufort's deep tournament run to the 4A Lower State semifinals in 2025-26. Her season also included her claiming Region Player of the Year honors and leading Beaufort in 3-point percentage.

How does a 3A Walhalla assembling that won its first state championship in any sport since the 1950s follow it up the following season? By repeating the feat. Cannon was a major factor in Walhalla prevailing over Keenan by a final score of 70-58 in early March's state get-together at Colonial Life Arena.
