The Compound Open Gym: Stealing the Spotlight

These prospects were difference makers on the court for their teams and their multidimensional impact made them stand out during The Compound Open gym on Monday night:    Sophia looks like the next court general coming through the ranks at Macomb Dakota. Sophia competes with a scrappy toughness, competitive edge, and has the fundamental skills to go with it. She used a pocket dribble to freeze her defender then drove by with a burst to cause a foul. Sophia scooped up a loose ball, raced to the rim, and side-stepped a defender to score a tough, contested layup off the glass. She's a great facilitator, has get by you burst off the dribble, makes the hustle plays, and pressures the ball on defense. Sophia will be a productive point guard in the backcourt for years to come and an immediate impact player.     Katelynn is an under-the-radar 6-foot forward prospect who will be gaining a following from college coaches sooner rather than later. She's athletic, has the muscular frame/size/mobility that translates to the next level at her position, and hasn't hit her ceiling yet. Katelynn towered over the field at The Compound open gym and displayed the qualities that will make her a highly targeted prospect in no time. She caught a pass inside and used an effective pivot to score the layup. Katelynn swiped the ball away at the top of the key and pushed the ball up the court using both hands to score a fast break layup. She has good hands in the post and caught an entry pass to score a layup off two feet at the rim.     KC had a phenomenal day at The Compound open gym. Her complete performance in every phase separated her on the court. KC pestered opponents on the defensive end, leading to multiple steals. After swiping the ball away, she raced up the court using both hands and went up strong to score the contested bucket. KC rotated from help and timed up the shot perfectly for the block. She crashed the boards with determination to secure multiple offensive rebounds, scored put backs, and hit a nice contested turnaround jumper in the lane off a high-rip move. KC attacked hard and went up strong off two feet to score in traffic. She drove to the basket aggressively and scored a same foot same hand finish with finesse in top gear. KC was dialed in from beyond the arc. She drained a three from the wing, the slot, and added an exclamation point with another triple from the wing to end the game. KC is about to have a breakout sophomore campaign at Yale.     Brea came sprinting out of the gates at The Compound open gym and she immediately captured my attention. Brea makes smart cuts to the basket, finds open space, and converts high-percentage shots. She scored many layups. Brea catches passes with good hands, maintains her balance, and goes up strong off two feet. She finished well with her right and left. Brea was an aggressive downhill driver, kept her eyes up in transition, and chased down rebounds. She shot the ball confidently from three and drained a smooth triple in the corner. Brea will give St. Clair an advantage in the backcourt.     Kaiah separated herself at The Compound open gym. Her shifty slashing abilities, facilitating, second gear, and ability to hit the outside jumper stood out. If it's not broken, don't fix it. Kaiah got her defender to bite on a pocket dribble hesi, then blew by for a layup. It worked once, so she went right back to it for another blow by layup. Kaiah showed her confidence as a three-point threat, sinking a deep straightaway three, another three up top, relocated to wthe wing for a triple, and swished a filthy crossover step-back jumper from the wing. She slashed to the hoop at will and I made a note of many split-drive layups. Kaiah used effective pivots inside to score in traffic, including a layup off a spin pivot and a crafty under-the-arm contested finish. She's a point guard ready for a big junior year at Dakota.     Thia is a freshman who looks ready to be an immediate impact player at Oxford. Something that makes me confident in that claim is the fact that Thia plays with poise, creates for others, doesn't force the issue, and has the versatility to play a guard or forward. She added a multidimensional presence to her team at The Compound open gym. She has a high IQ and awareness of spacing on the court. Thia moves well on the defensive end, which takes away straight line drives. She made good reads off the ball and finished efficiently at the rim. Thai sprinted ahead to score a speedy catch and finish with her left, ripped inside to score a soft floater after securing the offensive board, cut backdoor for a catch and finish layup, and made unselfish pases. She worked hard to secure rebounds and was consistent throughout the session.     Emily delivered a memorable performance at The Compound open gym. Her length, athleticism, fancy footwork, dominance on the boards, and relentless motor were separators on the court. Emily earned the reputation of "aggressive rebounder" in my notes. Her constant effort resulted in many offensive rebounds and put backs, including two straight boards on the same possession as she ripped the ball away with tenacity. Emily took a defensive rebound 94 feet for a coast to coast bucket after using a high rip move to get the angle to score the contested layup. She created steals on defense and covered ground in a hurry, pushing the ball up the floor using both hands, while taking advantage of her lanky frame. Emily caught a pass on the wing, then split the gap for a blow-by layup in top gear for a smooth high rip finish. She made a great transfer for a full-speed catch and finish, made an extra pass for the assist, and added another layup. Emily showed her outside range by sinking a triple from the wing off the hop and added an exclamation point by banking a straightaway three from deep at the buzzer. She turned heads and will be a seriously talented prospect to watch in Eisenhower's program the next four years.
