Expert Analysis
Jeremy Brooks | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
The convertibility of Quinn Pershing’s jump shot is impressive and she makes that happen because of the ten’s of thousands of shots she has put up during the off-season throughout her career up until this point. Pershing has somewhat of an unorthodox way of releasing the ball but it goes in some much that you get used to it. Throughout the past Winter season Pershing was someone that everyone opposing team had to worry about for Mount Vernon. The way she moved around the outside and how her teammates would find her led to several big buckets in meaningful contests as the season went on. That was crucial and it still seemed like no one was finding her when it mattered the most because it just kept happening over and over again. This is definitely someone that you don’t want to see making shots early on in the game if you are the opposing team because that usually means that she is going to be accurate all night long, no matter what type of defense you put in her face.

was there to deliver. Pershing hit a skillful left handed layup in transition early in the first quarter, and later gave the Mustangs a boost of momentum with a cross-court three. In crunch time she showed composure beyond her years. Quinn stuck herself in the paint for a much-needed offensive rebound and putback to regain Mount Vernon’s lead, then soon after, she splashed all of her free throws when points were at a premium to widen the gap for Mount Vernon. Averaging 12.1 points this season, I would point to

Time and time again we have seen Pershing hit big three point shots throughout a contest this season off the catch. She has a unique shot form but it goes in a lot. If you are an opposing coach, you have to scout prior and mark down that you cannot help off of her when someone else is driving towards the bucket. Too many teams are making that mistake and Pershing is making them pay. If Mount Vernon wants to make a run over the next 2-3 weeks into DSM, it’s going to take production out of their role players. Hoopers like Pershing. They will have a major hand in their overall success when it comes down to it.

is a great example of the old motto, “Good things come to those who work.” She didn’t see a ton of minutes as a Freshman on a loaded Mount Vernon squad last season, and that did not deter her — she has continued to stay committed and I can tell you firsthand this girl puts in the work. On another strong Mustang team this year Quinn has started 16/17 games and has improved her scoring average from last year’s 2.2 points per game, to 11.2 this year as a sophomore. Pershing is of the best deep threats in the WaMaC conference this year (shooting nearly 40% from 3PT), and makes defenses pay by hitting nearly 90% of her attempts at the free-throw line as well. Her contribution this season has helped MV string together an impressive 13-game win streak, and they are showing no signs of slowing down.

of Mount Vernon High School is known as a three point specialist to those who know her actual play-style but the past two games she has been shining as someone that has been consistently stepping up for the Mustangs in a number of different ways. On Tuesday night Pershing had a team high 22 points to help her squad beat Benton. Along with recording a few other positive stats. The Mustangs are not the same team they were last year but they do return some very capable prospects. If players like Pershing continue to step up like this and everyone does their job, they should have a solid chance to make it back to the State Tournament in a few months.

of Mount Vernon. Pershing just needs a little time and space to get her shot up and once she does, it usually goes in without it touching the net. This is someone that has made a ton of shots over her career in the off-seasons. She is dedicated to be the best version of herself every time she takes the floor and so hopefully we can see that live and in-action this Winter with the Mustangs.

There are a lot of questions this Winter at Mt. Vernon as the Mustangs are coming off of a 3A title and bringing in a new coaching staff but something that won’t be a question is the prospects they return. Someone out of their 2028 Class, who should get some more opportunity this Winter is

. Pershing didn’t play a ton last Winter but that makes sense with who their roster was. This year, she should have more of chance for consistent minutes through and through. This is someone that has put up and made over 100K shots in her career in training sessions so she knows how to put the ball in the basket. She just needs some time and opportunities. At this event we should be able to see what QP can really do. She needs to play with confidence in herself but if that happens, she should thrive!

shine in a 1v1 environment. Pershing competes with the recent 3A State Champs – Mount Vernon so this past Winter she was on the varsity team but didn’t see the floor a whole lot. I expect that to change moving forward. On Saturday Pershing displayed that she was one of the most skilled prospects in attendance. Offensively, she demonstrated that she can take her defender off the dribble going either way, she can finish at all three offensive levels, she can hit her defender with multiple counter moves if she is stopped, and she is a willing passer to other open teammates. Defensively, her length is sneaky. She recovers to the ball really well if she or a teammate is ever beaten and she never gives up on a play until the whistle blows. I know Pershing has a high work ethic in her off-time and I’m sure that’s going to come to the forefront throughout these next twelve months. It sure was obvious on Saturday.

Mount Vernon is going to return most of their Varsity team from a year ago and with the addition of some key Freshman, they could make some waves once again during the State Playoff’s this upcoming season. One of those impactful Freshman comes to us in the form of

. Pershing is a relentless worker. Someone that shows how dedicated she is, night in and night out with her hardwood and determination to this sport. If she can come in for some spot minutes early on in the season in the right situations, I’m sure her role will grow more as time goes on. It’s always tricky to find that balance as a coach early on in a season but if they can figure out their identity, it will be a very successful season for the Mustangs.

is going to come into her Freshman year at Mount Vernon ready to go. Pershing has been waiting for this moment for a few years now. She has been in the lab with her father working relentlessly on every aspect of her game and she is ready to put that work to the test. Pershing is a Guard, that is going to be able to score the ball at a high rate from all three levels, especially shooting it, while being a stout defender in both the half and full courts. Sometimes a prospect’s work speaks for itself and something about Quinn is that she never stops working. Doesn’t matter if she just played a 30 minutes game or if she just had a two hour practice, afterward she wants to become better. There aren’t too many prospects that I’ve seen work this hard at this age. If she can continue to expand her game at steady rate this offseason leading up into the Winter, she should be a difference maker within this Mustangs program almost right away. She is someone that prides herself on being well-rounded and that’s going to do her wonders in the long run. The Mustangs will return most of their Varsity team moving into the 2024-2025 season so that will play a factor but once she gets a chance, it’s going to be hard to pull her off the court. That’s for sure.
