2021-2022 Class 4A Honors

With the 2021-2022 season having concluded last Saturday, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 4A performed this year. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2025), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won’t see Freshmen in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 4A.   MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="59773" first="Ashlynn" last="Shade"], 2023, 5-10 SG, Noblesville H.S. Ashlynn was on full display during the Class 4A State Finals, matching a Class 4A record with her 31 points against Franklin Community. For three seasons now, Ashlynn has been a stat producer who has been unstoppable at times offensively. She can score the ball at all three levels, she can create offense for herself or teammates, plus she does a nice job of rebounding her position. Defensively, she is gritty and physical, and she can take on most guards and wings. She is arguably one of the top prospects in the state, regardless of class. Ashlynn recently made a verbal commitment to attend the University of Connecticut. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="10766" first="Ayanna" last="Patterson"], 2022, 6-3 SF, Homestead H.S. Ayanna stepped up in a big way during her Senior season, helping the Lady Spartans to a 23-2 record overall, with both losses coming at the hands of the Noblesville Millers. Without her in the lineup, I’m guessing Homestead would have been closer to a 15-win team in 2020-2021. Ayanna averaged a double-double and scored more than 600 points on the year, plus she displayed a much more advanced perimeter game. She has consistently shown off her athleticism with two-handed dunks, and in January she was selected as a 2022 McDonald’s All-American. She will attend the University of Connecticut in the Fall. MOST IMPROVED PLAYER [player_tooltip player_id="127236" first="Saige" last="Stahl"], 2023, 6-1 PF, Columbus East H.S. Saige made a huge jump this season, as she went from a nice complimentary player at Columbus East, to a legitimate prospect who is popping up on a lot of colleges’ recruiting lists. Saige played in just 14 games as a Sophomore, averaging 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. This season, those numbers jumped to 17.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. She also increased her steals from 1.9 to 4.5 per game, her field goal percentage went up 7% (from 49% to 56%), and she was much more physical, getting to the free throw line 5.8 times per game instead of 3.1 times per game in 2019-2020. She’ll be one to watch this Spring/Summer. COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="97243" first="Teresa" last="Maggio"], 2022, 5-5 PG, McCutcheon H.S. Teresa missed roughly the first 40 days of the regular season due to injury, and the Mavericks posted an admirable 6-3 record in her absence. Over her first five games back, she was trying to get her footing, so there were some initial struggles early on. At that point, it just clicked, and Teresa was on a different level than at any point in her career. Over her final ten games, she averaged 26.1 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.5 steals per game, while shooting 52.9% from the field, 41.5% from 3-point range, and 92.2% from the charity stripe. The mighty mite will attend IUPUI next season and surely bring a ton of energy with her. FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR [player_tooltip player_id="295763" first="Jaylah" last="Lampley"], 2025, 6-1 SF, Lawrence Central H.S. Jaylah entered high school with some fanfare, and throughout the season, she didn’t disappoint. The Lady Bears posted just their second winning season since 2011-2012, and Jaylah was a big part of that. At her size, she’s able to play smooth and fluidly, like a guard/wing. She can make plays off the bounce for herself or others, but she is also a multilevel scoring threat who can knock down open jumpers consistently. She posted season highs of 27 points, ten rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and four blocked shots, and she has already picked up a number of high-major Division-I offers to this point.
