These are some of the best scorers in the state, regardless of class, and they should all have big sophomore seasons. Let’s take a look at the top shooting guards in the latest rankings update.
Simpson’s work ethic alone is going to take her far, but she also has a ton of talent. She contributes in every way imaginable whenever she steps on to the floor. You’re never going to have to question her effort or how bad she wants to help her team win games. Simpson can put the ball in the basket at all 3 levels, but she’s going to pass up her own shots if it means better looks for her teammates. She’s the kind of player that can find herself in every single statistical category at the end of each game, and she’s already hit a clutch buzzer beater 2 games into her sophomore season.
Barrier has Steph Curry range to go along with her excellent shooting form. Despite early struggles from deep this season, she can really shoot the basketball at an extremely high level and I can say with confidence that her outside shots will start falling this season. Barrier is another player that puts in serious work outside of practice to constantly get better. Her IQ is high and she’s a really tough player overall. As well as she can shoot the ball, she’s a true threat at all 3 levels and she’ll find ways to put the ball in the basket against anyone. The 2025 class is loaded, but Barrier is still by far one of the best players in this class.
Duck is one of the quickest players in this state. She is so shifty with the basketball and she can beat everyone down the floor in a flash. Her numbers from the start of this season really illustrate how much she brings to the floor. After averaging 4.5 PPG and 0.7 RPG as a freshman, she has already drastically improved those numbers in the start of her sophomore season as she is averaging 11 PPG and 2.7 RPG throughout CAL’s 1st 3 games. Duck can handle the ball and pressure well, but her ability to weave through defenders and get to the basket is special. She also can finish via floaters, jump shots, and 3-pointers.
Johnson is now the leader on a team that was loaded with talent, including the 2022 Miss KY Basketball recipient, and she has already shown that she is more than capable of taking over any scoring responsibilities necessary. Although Anderson County has only played 2 games so far this season, she’s averaging 22 PPG and 7 RPG throughout those initial games. In comparison, she averaged 8.5 PPG and 5 RPG as a freshman. Johnson has done a great job of attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line early on. She has really had to step up and take on a lot more responsibility this year, but she has responded to that challenge in the best possible way, leading her team to a 2-0 start on the season.
Bale has a knack for putting the ball in the basket and she’s already showing how well she can score the ball in the start of her sophomore season. The lefty can get to the basket and scores in crafty ways around the rim, but she can also knock down shots from deep. Bale has also shown an ability to draw fouls and has been knocking down free throw after free throw this season. Her handles are strong and she makes good passes as well. She can get out into the passing lanes to come up with steals or deflections and she makes good decisions in transition. Bale averaged double figures last season, but she’s increased her average significantly at the start of this season and I expect that to be more so what you’ll see from her this entire season.
Highlights
Molden continues to put people across the state on alert. Her basketball IQ is so high and she has so much talent. She can handle the ball well, she sees the floor and delivers great passes, and she makes plays for herself and her teammates. Molden can score at a high level and she’s already shown that against the #1 team in the state this season, scoring 19 of her team’s 33 points. She consistently scores at all 3 levels even when she’s well-defended. However, as impressive as her scoring ability is, she also contributes in many other ways for her team. Molden is a leader on the floor and she really works hard. She crashes the boards, she goes after loose balls, and she defends. Don’t be surprised to see Molden on the leaderboards for multiple statistical categories by the end of the season.
Moore is known for her ability to knock down shots and she can hit them from deep range. She catches the ball ready to shoot and she can get her shot off really quickly. She can also knock down shots on the move or off of the dribble. Outside of shooting, Moore can also score around the rim and she can get creative with her finishes. She plays hard and crashes the boards strong as well. She averaged double digit points in her freshman season and she’s already continued on that path at the start of her sophomore season. While her outside shots have been falling at a similar percentage as last season, her shots haven’t been falling as much inside, but I think they will. Moore has already had a 20 point performance this season, but I think you can expect even more from her as this season goes on.
