With having a vast amount of skilled players out of this state, throughout all age levels, to be named as basically 1 of the Top 25 for an age group, for an entire AAU season speaks volumes. It shows to everyone watching out there that no matter the stage, competition level, or situation in front of the player – They WILL succeed. Below is the list of players selected to the 16U All State-First Team, for the spring/summer AAU season, out of the state of Iowa. Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Macy Comito had a AAU season to remember while playing up with the All Iowa Attack 16U EYBL team. Comito was a consist game changer that made the right choice on the court a majority of the time this spring/summer. She displayed that she can handle the ball with either pressure or in the open court, while being an efficient scorer and coach on the floor for her team. This pick was an easy one in my opinion. A 2026 player, moving up and competing at an elite level against teams on the EYBL circuit is no joke. She has set herself up for a nice upcoming season this winter at Carlisle high school. Make sure to stop by and watch them compete if you have a chance, you won’t be disappointed.
Mya Crawford Mya Crawford 5’7″ | SG Ankeny Centennial | 2025 State IA was one of my favorite players to watch last year in high school basketball throughout the state of Iowa. Crawford plays with emotion. She understands when to pump her teammates up compared to when she needs to get on them about a problem she sees on the floor. This spring/summer Crawford had another standout season for her All Iowa Attack EYBL team. She was moving to the open spots on the floor and getting looks at the basket, rebounding at a high rate against alike-size opponents, defending the 1-3 position depending on if she had to switch, and most importantly-she was a consistent communicator on the court at all times. When you add all of these things together, you get a Division-1 basketball player and thats what Crawford is. She currently holds a few offers, with more on their way this high school season if she keeps it simple and plays “her” game. Something more than do-able.
A player that has jumped onto the basketball scene in Iowa this spring/summer is Maryne Szalo Maryne Szalo 5’10” | SF Waukee | 2026 State IA . Szalo is a lengthy CG/Forward who can spread the floor with her guard abilities, or she can post up on smaller defenders near the hoop. Szalo’s game is really impressive. This season for the 16U group, I’m not sure of a player who had a better spring at this position. She displayed that she can play at an intense level and contribute at a high rate while doing it. Not to mention, that she has a high motor with no quit. In other words, Szalo was definitely a player that stood out this AAU season. I’m expecting a big year out of her at Waukee High School this winter.
Highlights
The only player on a 16U All State AAU team that I named, that is currently committed to play college ball at this point is Karrington Asp Karrington Asp 6’2″ | PF Western Dubuque | 2025 State IA . Asp is a handful on the court for her opponents. She has size, strength, skill, and speed. When you add those all together, it’s a tough matchup. She has coordination to catch at the three point line and take her defender into the paint, she can score with her back to the basket going over either shoulder on the catch, and she can score out of the mid-post in a number of different ways depending on how her opponent is playing her. This AAU season for Asp, was one of the most compete I saw at any age level. Her game is going to translate to the college stage and I expect her to produce right away after what I’ve seen this spring/summer, but for now, she is going to focus on her junior year of high school ball that is coming up. If she locks in this fall, she could be a top 5 player in the state of Iowa this winter.
Rebecca Aagard Rebecca Aagard 6’2″ | PF North Polk | 2025 State IA is going to be a name you hear several times this upcoming high school season. Aagard is a 6’3 center, with coordination and great footwork. She moves well, on and off of the ball, at a good rate for her size. When she has the chance to post up, she takes it, making her defender pay if the defense doesn’t bring a second player. This spring/summer AAU season was one Aagard should be proud of. She displayed that she is a solid post player, with a good foundation to build on moving forward. Not to mention that she put up some great numbers this season for her Pure Prep 16U E40 team. I’m expecting this winter for Aagard to bring in a handful of college offers. She is the type of player that has a lot of positives in this sport and she can build on that. At the next level she would be able to make an impact. To what extent? It all depends on where she ends up but I would be shocked if she didn’t see a college floor at the end of the day with everything she brings to the table on a consistent basis. A player that is definitely deserving of this first team selection at the center position.
