On Monday Night I had the chance to step in and see the first official game of the Varsity season for both Iowa City - Liberty and Southeast Polk High Schools. This contest was a tight one but in the end Liberty took over and secured the victory. This was a game that possessed a few D1 college committed prospects, so as you can imagine there were some exciting moments. In this article I highlight players from the Liberty side of things, that did a good job of standing out to everyone watching throughout the game.

Mosley started off the game for Liberty and did her part of playing sound defense. Early on she fell into foul trouble and that impacted her minutes for the remainder of the contest but the moments she had when she was in were notable. From an outside perspective, Mosley is going to have her moments this Winter before taking her talent to the court with Kirkwood at the next level. She will have some really good games throughout this next six months as long as she stays locked in mentally moving forward. Something she did a great job of last night.

The heart beat of this team on both sides of the ball is definitely going to be the South Dakota Commit, [player_tooltip player_id='837358' first='Natalie' last='Ramsey'] for the Lightning. Ramsey has height at 6'0 to be able to post or rebound, she has a nice pull up jumper off the dribble, and she demonstrates a beautiful step through move when cut off in the lane. Last night all of the things I listed above were on full display. Ramsey didn't start off the game too hot offensively but she ended up with a game high 28 points on 11/23 shooting from the field, along with a handful of other positive stats. This is going to be a big season for Ramsey. This one and the next one by the looks of it.

[player_tooltip player_id='833974' first='Ava' last='Casey'] at the PG position proved last night that she is going to be a staple of this program over the next three years with her ability to handle and control their offense. Casey is a Sophomore but she is young on hardwood. You can the just by watching her play but she also shows a ton of promise. Last night Southeast Polk's strategy on defense was to force ball-handlers to the left and Casey did a good job of working on attacking those open lanes with a nifty crossover as the game dwindled down. All in all, this is a pass first, calm and composed prospect we are talking about here. I expect her to take strides over these next few seasons. She did a good job showing out last night as one of the best underclassman on the floor between both team's, which speaks volumes.

After what I watched last night, I would say that [player_tooltip player_id='881144' first='Madilyn' last='Meyer'] is going to be a "glue guy" this Winter with the Lightning. Meyer was one of the first off the bench in the first quarter, to come in for whoever was in foul trouble. From there, Meyer was tasked with mixing up what she was doing on the floor. Sometimes it was her guarding intensely for 5-10 seconds, sometimes it was switching and coming over from help-side for some defense. Whatever the team needs, Meyer is willing to do, all while keeping a positive attitude when things might not go her way. Every team needs "glue" players to help them win. These players keep the team together ultimately in the biggest moments and I think Meyer falls into that conversation right now.

Goodheart is a D1 level shooter from behind the three point line. It does not matter where she is standing. If Goodheart has a moment to let it go with space, it's going to have a good chance of going in and that was something that really fired up Liberty in this ball game. Things were slow to start, going back and forth between both programs but a constant for the Lightning was the shooting ability of Goodheart. She started off things from deep in the first half and she ended up finishing the ball game with 11 points on 2/7 shooting, including going 5/6 from the free throw line. This might not seem too crazy but it was needed to keep this one close early on, until others ended up stepping in and helping them secure the W.

[player_tooltip player_id='788566' first='Maddie' last='Casey'] made some clutch baskets as time was winding down in the second half of this one and that really helped this group hold their lead when things because intense towards the end. I'm not sure how Casey will fit into a college program at the next level yet. she can definitely play at that level but I'm sure her mind is locked in on the season at hand. Something we should all respect.

The youngest player to grace the floor last night for the IC - Liberty was PG, [player_tooltip player_id='1044955' first='Natalie' last='Schechinger']. Schechinger is solid as a prospect. She may be young but she doesn't make too many mistakes, she plays tenacious defense, and she understands what it means to be a quality teammate to those around her. Against the Rams it would have been easy for Schechinger to defer and sit in a corner but she played with some aggression and more-so, confidence. Which was ultimately extremely promising in the end. If she can continue to come in and play like this moving forward, she is going to be someone we talk about for years to come out of Eastern Iowa, with this being just the beginning.
