Following up on my breakdown of Kentucky's Top 5 teams, it's time to turn our attention to some sleeper contenders who could shake things up this season. While the usual powerhouses will grab most of the headlines, several teams across the Bluegrass State have the talent, experience, and potential to make some serious noise. These squads might be flying under the radar right now, but don't be surprised if they emerge as legitimate threats come postseason time.

Bethlehem

In Head Coach Glenn Wathen's first season at the helm, the Banshees finished in the middle of the pack in the standings but still managed to rack up 23 wins and advance to the 5th Region championship game. They return the majority of their production from last season, including seasoned seniors [player_tooltip player_id='747689' first='Kaylee' last='McElroy'] (Centre College commit) and [player_tooltip player_id='743671' first='Loren' last='Macy'] (Notre Dame commit), both of whom earned All-Region honors. With the arrival of transfer [player_tooltip player_id='961302' first='Maliah' last='Courtney'], Kentucky's top junior and a First Team All-State selection, along with talented freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1304352' first='Evelyn' last='Ehringer'], who is a star in the making, this team has the potential to reach the pinnacle of Kentucky high school girls basketball. On paper, Bethlehem looks like the team to beat in the 5th Region. They have the talent and experience to shock the state this season.

North Laurel

North Laurel returned to familiar territory during the 2025–26 season, winning the 13th Region championship and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive year under Head Coach Eddie Mahan. The Lady Jaguars still have their anchor in 6'2" senior and Western Kentucky commit [player_tooltip player_id='747655' first='Mariella' last='Claybrook'], who led the team in scoring and rebounding last season. She's the frontrunner for 13th Region Player of the Year and could very well be a Miss Basketball finalist. Let's not forget about superstar freshman [player_tooltip player_id='1274577' first='Laylee' last='Phillips'], along with a supporting cast of [player_tooltip player_id='1109605' first='Bella' last='Lewis'], [player_tooltip player_id='777878' first='Emma' last='Carl'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1133142' first='Bella' last='Mahan'], who will all play pivotal roles this season. When you have a coach with over 300 career wins, you have a proven recipe for success. The Lady Jaguars will once again be on the prowl, with their sights set on another trip to Rupp Arena.

Owensboro Catholic

It was business as usual for Owensboro Catholic last season, as the Lady Aces posted a 27-10 record, claimed the 3rd Region All “A” tournament and regional championships, and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the seventh time under Head Coach Michael Robertson. They bring back all five starters from last season, led by seniors [player_tooltip player_id='958540' first='Katie' last='Hagan'], [player_tooltip player_id='812951' first='Taylor' last='Mannahan'], [player_tooltip player_id='997467' first='Claudia' last='Munsey'], and [player_tooltip player_id='999589' first='Layla' last='Martin'], who are looking to end their high school careers on a high note, along with junior [player_tooltip player_id='913673' first='Sophia' last='Newby'], a player I'm very high on. This veteran group has plenty of chemistry, is well-coached, and features multiple scoring options capable of putting up double figures on any given night. The Lady Aces are my favorite to come out of the 3rd Region and shouldn't be overlooked as a team capable of making a deep run at Rupp Arena.

Johnson Central

Johnson Central was once again one of the top teams in the 15th Region last season, capturing its third consecutive 57th District championship and advancing to the regional title game, where the Lady Eagles suffered a gut-wrenching loss to Pikeville, a team they had beaten twice during the regular season. With standout junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='934138' first='Karlea' last='Stanley'] leading the way, along with a talented sophomore trio of [player_tooltip player_id='1302830' first='Allie' last='Slone'], [player_tooltip player_id='1293275' first='Emma' last='McKenzie'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1253055' first='Kamryn' last='Duncan'], who I believe are all capable of taking a big leap this season, Johnson Central has plenty of firepower returning. I expect Head Coach Jim Bob Hicks and the Lady Eagles to be on a redemption tour this season, focused on reclaiming the 15th Region crown and making their second Sweet 16 appearance in three years.

Metcalfe County

Metcalfe County had its share of highs and lows last season, ultimately finishing with a tepid 16-12 record. The Lady Hornets return their leading scorer and rebounder in Lindsay Wilson commit [player_tooltip player_id='736963' first='Jozie' last='Allen'], but the biggest addition is Middle Tennessee State commit [player_tooltip player_id='743651' first='Avery' last='Morris']. The reigning 4th Region Player of the Year, as selected by the coaches, she left behind a lasting legacy at Allen County-Scottsville as the program's all-time leading scorer. With Allen and Morris leading the charge, this dynamic duo could be exactly what the Lady Hornets need to get over the hump, take hold of the 4th Region championship, and punch their ticket to the Sweet 16.
