2022-2023 Class 2A Honors

With the 2022-2023 season having concluded a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 2A performed during the 2022-2023 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2026), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won't see Freshmen in any additional groupings other than Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 2A.   .   TOP CLASS 2A AWARDS   These postseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I thought stood out in Class 2A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.   Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='206425' first='Gloria' last='Brewer'], 2023, 5-7 G, Greencastle H.S. - The meaning of most valuable player to me leans more towards the idea of if you removed this player from their team, how would their team continue to perform. After spending time playing for the Indianapolis Homeschool Wildcats, Gloria played her Senior season at Greencastle High School, where she amassed 688 points, 281 rebounds, 91 assists, and 128 steals in 27 games. She also helped them go from 6 wins in 2021-2022 to a 23-5 record this year. She has always been a quietly tough-nosed competitor, a hard-worker, and a versatile guard who can play a variety of roles. She scores the ball at all three levels, plus she gets after it defensively and plays bigger than she is.   Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='59732' first='Ashlynn' last='Brooke'], 2023, 5-7 G, Pioneer H.S. - As opposed to the most valuable player award, the most outstanding player award points at simply the best basketball player in all of Class 2A, regardless of team quality, depth etc. Ashlynn capped off a nice career with two strong seasons at the end. She has tremendous skill, a high IQ for the game, and she typically sees things happen in her mind before they actually do on the floor. She is an accurate shooter and accomplished ball-handler, but I continue to be convinced that her vision and passing ability are her best traits. She also did a tremendous job of keeping teammates involved, even though she was clearly option #1. Ashlynn will play at Ball State University next year.   Most Improved Player: Abby Moore, 2023, 5-4 G, Scecina Memorial H.S. - Abby literally just popped up on my radar following her output this season. While she has played four years of Varsity basketball, and she has contributed in the past as more of just a facilitator and defender, this year she improved her ability to score the ball by leaps and bounds. As a Sophomore, Abby scored 8.2 points per game, and she averaged just 6.8 points per game last season as a Junior. This year, however, she scored it at a 16.6 point per game clip, and she did so primarily by being more aggressive. She doubled her 3-point shooting and shot 3% better outside, she more than doubled her free throws and was 7% better there, plus she was much stronger getting to the rim.   Most Outstanding Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='486521' first='Laniah' last='Wills'], 2026, 6-0 F, Lapel H.S. - I first saw Laniah as a 7th grader, and the talent was noticeable then just watching her in warmups. She is long, wiry-strong, quick, bouncy, and she has long-striding type of North/South speed. She moves effortlessly in any direction, and she is going to continue getting much stronger. This year, she was a double-double nearly every night, and she forced teams to collapse on her and limit her touches, allowing teammates who shoot the ball well outside to break free and get open looks. By the end of the year, they were one of the top teams in Class 2A and lost in the State Finals by a single point. Not only was Laniah impressive individually, but she also impacted her team immensely.   . CLASS 2A ALL-STATE TEAMS   Like the postseason awards (above), this was another attempt to honor girls who stood out in Class 2A during the 2022-2023 season. These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. While we can debate who should be where, I do think it's at least easy to understand why each of the players listed below were selected to be honored.
