2022-2023 Class 3A Honors

With the 2022-2023 season having concluded a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 3A performed during the 2022-2023 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2026), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won't see Freshmen in any additional groupings other than Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 3A.   .   TOP CLASS 3A AWARDS   These postseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I thought stood out in Class 3A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.   Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='59762' first='McKenna' last='Layden'], 2023, 6-2 W, Northwestern H.S. - The meaning of most valuable player to me leans more towards the idea of if you removed this player from their team, how would their team continue to perform. Since the 2016-2017 season, there has been a Layden in uniform for the Lady Tigers. The last couple of seasons have been McKenna's turn to shine and lead, and she has done an admirable job of just that. Yes, she puts up big scoring numbers, but she can make shots from the perimeter or around the basket, and she's a willing passer with a natural feel for the game. I also like the fact that, even though she's long and wiry, she isn't afraid to get inside and mix it up. She will join her sister next season at Purdue University.   Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='59748' first='Nevaeh' last='Foster'], 2023, 5-8 G, Mishawaka Marian H.S. - As opposed to the most valuable player award, the most outstanding player award points at simply the best basketball player in all of Class 3A, regardless of team quality, depth etc. Coming into the year, Nevaeh was already at 1541 career points and was carrying a career average of 19.8 points per game. All she did this year was score 702 points, averaging 25.1 points per game as she heads off to Western Kentucky University. Not only that, but Nevaeh is another ballplayer with a tremendous feel for the game. She almost has a crafty, "old school" style of game, she changes speeds very well, and she does a nice job of using her body to create space and draw contact.   Most Improved Player: [player_tooltip player_id='496064' first='Mya' last='Davis'], 2024, 5-7 G, Heritage Christian H.S. - During her Freshman season, Mya saw action in about a dozen games for Lawrence Central, averaging just over two points per game. Last year as a Sophomore, she had to miss a majority of the Varsity season due to transfer restrictions, but she returned for five games, averaging just over six points per game. This year, she took off. I remember a Fall of 2022 showcase event where I almost didn't recognize her because she looked so much more confident and aggressive. That translated into a Junior year with a 19.2 point per game scoring average, not to mention she still managed to hand out 4.6 assists per game. Additionally, she is a master thief, averaging 4.3 steals per game.   Comeback Player of the Year: [player_tooltip player_id='295708' first='Katrina' last='Cooper'], 2025, 5-10 F, Scottsburg H.S. - The Comeback Player of the Year award tends to either go to someone who has dealt with an injury, or who essentially took a year off and returned to action. I remember watching Katrina play grassroots ball during a couple of different Summers in middle school, but she missed her Freshman season with a knee injury. I was under the impression she wasn't going to ever play again, but instead she helped the Scottsburg Lady Warriors to a 19-6 record by averaging 10.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, shooting 57% from the field and 74% from the charity stripe. She is long, wiry-strong, and somewhat bouncy, plus she plays with a nice motor. I am anxious to see her again soon.   Most Outstanding Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='486484' first='Emily' last='Parker'], 2026, 5-9 W, Boonville H.S. - When I first saw Emily during the Spring of 2022, it was obvious that she is very skillful, has a good basketball IQ, and she plays with a solid feel for the game. It's to no surprise that she put together a rookie campaign for the Lady Pioneers like she did. She can fulfill multiple roles within an offense, whether she needs to initiate that offense, attack the basket, or knock down open shots. She's also fairly strong for her age and doesn't back down from contact. She'll get inside and rebound, and she can even defend undersized posts when necessary. She is such a well-rounded ballplayer, that she should always be productive for a Boonville program looking to turn the corner.   . CLASS 3A ALL-STATE TEAMS   Like the postseason awards (above), this was another attempt to honor girls who stood out in Class 3A during the 2022-2023 season. These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. While we can debate who should be where, I do think it's at least easy to understand why each of the players listed below were selected to be honored.
