Bullis vs St. John's

We have been waiting over a month for this game, an opening regular season game that had a championship game feel. Although we have seen both of these teams in scrimmage tournaments, this one was different. There were no "do overs", "practicing new things" or "vanilla defenses" and now everything counts. This was a all boys tournament with this game added in and it turned out to be the game of the tournament.

Bullis started strong but SJC managed to hang in there in the beginning taking their first lead of the game with a three pointer late in the first quarter. The lead didn't last long as the Bulldogs started to take control and went into the half with a 36-29 lead. In the third quarter Bullis upped their pressure and the Cadets started rushing shots as the found themselves down 13 points and was down 55-41 to start the final period.

In the fourth with the blowout all set, the Cadets decided to bring their own pressure, they realized that there was not a 15 point play in their playbook and began chipping away at the lead piece by piece. The St. John's took the lead with a three pointer with under two minutes to play, however, their star center [player_tooltip player_id='569089' first='Camille' last='Nesmith'] had to lead the game after picking up her fifth foul. In the end the Cadets completed the comeback and held on for a 66-65 victory. Here are the top performers of the day.

Morgan shot the three very well, she was terrific in the mid-range working her way to a game high 31 points. She was able to create space despite being closely guarded for the entire game. She had a smooth pull up off of the wrap-around dribble that had the defender in a daze as the ball was going through the hoop. Then there was the fade away and floater off of one leg that were pro-level moves. However, I was most impressed with her inside positioning where she was able to post and seal the defender for an easy drop step and finish.

Giselle used her defense to create offense for her and her team. She had several steals that she turned into fast break layups or assists for others to score. She drove the lane well getting contact while finishing. She had one spin move in the lane leading into a basket at the rim that was a thing of beauty. She finished with 15 points in the Cadets victory.

Ivanna started the action off with a three. Her crossover dribble incited fear to as you could see the the defender start to retreat as she began her windup. She was knocking down threes and abusing defenders in the lane. She finished the game with 26 points and almost every play being a highlight real and only two free-throws on three point plays.

Dahlia finished with 15 points and was effective knocking down the corner three. Her most impressive feat was starting the game off defending [player_tooltip player_id='625375' first='Morgan' last='Stewart'] one on one. She moved her feet well and was able to stay on the ball, eventually the switch happened but she showed that she is an elite level defender that can play both ways.

Samantha had a three point play the old fashioned way. Bullis was well aware of her threat from beyond the arc and didn't leave her open much. She had the most important play of the day as she was fouled on a three pointer and calmly knocked down all three free throws which is tough to do.
