Oakland Elite Camp: Something to Prove Pt 1

Oakland University Elite Camp brought over 60 prospects to the O'Rena for a combination of skill stations, small-sided games, and many full-court 5v5 games. The entire coaching staff was actively engaged with prospects throughout the stations and games, which added value to the experience for attendees. She started by having some of the strongest, quickest, and tightest handles during the stationary two-ball dribble drill. In games, Gabby attacked downhill at full tilt, exploiting gaps with a burst to score multiple drive-by layups. She crashed the boards, then elevated to score an athletic tip-in at the rim, and added a smooth mid-corner jumper off the dribble. Gabby has several offers and is a great recruiting spot right now heading into what should be a fantastic junior season at Columbia Central. She's a showcase vet, consistently performing at a high level in that environment. Gabby is one of the headline prospects competing at The Expo, and we're excited to have her back.     A'leeyah's quick-twitch, shifty handles, second-gear speed, and dynamic skill set separated her as one of the more electric guards on the court at Oakland Elite Camp. Her control, speed, transfers, and overall execution during the two-ball stationary dribbling drills were among the best. That translated directly to the games. A'leeyah pushed the ball up the court with fast dribbles to beat the defense back in transition, then scored her layup in top gear. A'leeyah can slash and score or knock down the long shot when defenders try to take away the drive. She buried a long, straightaway three off the bounce and added another smooth triple off the catch from the wing. A'leeyah looks poised for another noteworthy season at Bay City John Glenn.     Evia is a guard-wing combo prospect I'm calling my shot on as a player who will be getting a huge uptick in college interest soon. It's been a minute since I saw her play, liked her potential back then, and now she's budding into a perennial college prospect. Her length, athleticism, mobility, and skill set will draw attention from the next level because those attributes are a premium at the two-guard-wing spot. It didn't take long to realize Evia belongs in that next tier in her class. Evia showed her outside range by sinking a silky smooth mid-wing three and made a quick basket cut for a catch and finish against a tall post player, putting a high arc on the finish. She's going to be a breakout player at The Expo and a must-see prospect at Bloomfield Hills.     Jayna seems to be on a mission to dominate at Elite Camps, and Oakland Elite Camp was no exception. She imposed her will physically, dominated the glass, scored contested shots in the paint, pinballing defenders out of the way, and ripped the nets from beyond the arc. Her top highlight clip was a deep step-back facial three at the buzzer from the slot. That one got me out of my seat. She attacked baseline off a screen, landed on two feet, then converted a contested floater in the paint. Jayna scored several putbacks after muscling into position for the offensive rebound, slashed to the hoop for multiple layups, drilled a step-back corner three and another step-back triple, and went up strong off two feet after a power dribble for the putback. She added an exclamation point to her day with a crossover-spin combo move to get by, jumped and floated in mid-air like a scene from Angels in the Outfield, and finished with a soft touch off the glass. Back-to-back years at Oakland Elite Camp and two straight memorable performances for Jayna.     Madison is one of the most dynamic, compact, strong, skilled, and versatile point guards in her class. She was a Top Performer at Oakland Elite Camp last year, and she delivered an encore performance this time around. Madison's speed, control, transfers, athletic stance, and overall performance during the two-ball stationary dribbling series paced the group. Her IQ was evident in the games. Madison recognized a mismatch advantage on the offensive end with a 6-foot teammate in the high post being defended by a guard, gave her a quick head nod, threw the lob, and picked up an assist. She penetrated off the dribble, got to the third level, forced the help side to commit, then made the correct extra pass out to the perimeter for an assist on a corner three. I made a note of "good vision", but Madison also created her own shot. She finished a smooth reverse layup, pushed the ball on a fast break, got to two feet, absorbed the contact, then finished with her left. It looked like Madison dropped the ball from the ceiling when she buried a high arcing shot from the elbow off a screen that fell straight through the net. She's crafty as they come and used a lightning-quick pocket crossover dribble to get by with burst, then completed the play with a left-handed stretch finish in traffic.     Lauren is a guard-wing prospect who keeps showing that she belongs in the elite group of 2029s. She has length, athleticism, coordination, and skill that projects to the higher levels. She had a huge AAU season with Hype, following a monster freshman year at Plymouth Christian Academy, and was solid again at Oakland Elite Camp. Lauren showed great hands and instincts. She read the defense well, cut to the basket, and converted multiple high-percentage shots in the paint with good touch. Lauren is a shooter who makes defenses pay when they give her space on the perimeter. She found her hot spot in the corner and drained a pair of triples with confidence. Lauren will be one of the most feared talents in D4, and as a soon-to-be sophomore, her potential to get even better is exciting to think about.
