About Maya

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

My style of play is aggressive on both ends of the court. I am not afraid of contact and I often seek it out going to the hoop to get the And-1. My track background as a sprinter allows me to play fast, while my field background in long jump and high jump has helped me become one of the top rebounding guards in the state of Maryland.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I am a no nonsense, hard working player who will do whatever it takes to win. I play with a lot of heart and toughness, and that was recognized by my coaches this past season as I was awarded the unsung hero of the team. I don't worry about personal accolades, I just do whatever is needed to get the job done. I am also a very intelligent player, and that can be seen with my 3.8 GPA.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I am a Type 1 diabetic, and managing that as an athlete can sometimes be challenging. But my discipline helps me to keep my blood glucose levels in range while playing basketball at a high level. Although I have to take precautions other players don't have to do, I don't let it effect my play or participation.

Maya made some nice plays throughout the tournament. She showed power inside using her strength and body to finish with contact. On the drive she used good body control to euro finesse her way by the defender for the score. She was able to weave full court in transition to get all the way to the basket. She played solidly all around in each game that I watched showing that she is amongst the elite in Baltimore.

Maya is the Ultimate warrior in the paint. She’s a bit undersized for what she does but it doesn’t stop her. She battles relentlessly on the boards and is one of the top rebounding guards in the area. Today she finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds in Pikesville’s big win over NDP.

Maya jumped 18 spots in the rankings to #14. Her presence keeps Pikesville as state championship contenders. She gets to the basket well and finishes at various angles when contested. Her outside shot needs to be respected as she makes open shots with a nice shooting form. She plays the passing lanes well and scores several points a game on transition buckets after steals.

Maya was a key contributor for Pikesville this season in their state championship run.  She averaged close to 7 points and 4 rebounds which is a solid freshman season.  She will be looked to for more next season if the Panthers are to make another run.
