Expert Analysis
Danyle Bowers | Prep Girls Hoops Scout
Evelyn made an immediate statement in her first varsity action for Detroit Country Day before being sidelined by a hand injury early in her freshman season. The long, versatile guard showed she can score at all three levels, using her length and skill to finish inside, hit shots from the perimeter, and make plays in between. She also impacted the game in other ways, rebounding at a high rate for a guard and showing strong court awareness as a passer. Defensively, Evelyn used her size and instincts to disrupt passing lanes, challenge shots, and record blocks, making it clear she can be a difference-maker on both ends when she returns.

Evelyn received her first college offer recently from Oakland University, and it was clear at the DCDHS Fall League that she has that potential. Evelyn used quick crossovers to create space from defenders and attacked with a burst to earn many trips to the free-throw line. She finished tough layups, pushed the ball in transition, and caused turnovers with her defensive pressure. Evelyn dropped into the passing lane for a steal and took it the distance for a layup. She finished a hard drive with a euro-step floater and knocked down perimeter jumpers. Evelyn drilled a corner three, lifted to the wing for another three, and drained a deep straightaway triple off a crossover dribble.

Evelyn had a monster performance at SkillCase last weekend, and she had another solid showing at the Freshman Showcase. Evelyn was electric during 3v3, Danyle described her as “unguardable,” and she converted some seriously tough layups. Evelyn was an impact player for Team 5 during 5v5. She buried multiple three-pointers, crashed the boards hard to secure rebounds, drove hard downhill to cause fouls, and scored layups. Evelyn scanned the court in transition while pushing the ball with both hands, and is going to be an exciting playmaker to watch this winter with Country Day.

Evelyn caught my attention early in the travel season and has consistently demonstrated qualities on the court that make her one of the most promising prospects in the 2029 class. Evelyn has the fundamentals needed to be an elite scorer, but she also plays hard on the defensive end. Evelyn blew me away at the Highest Platform SkillCase last weekend, and I think that event will serve as the perfect tune-up for her to have another big day at the Freshman Showcase tomorrow.

The best prospects don’t excel in one category; they excel in every category. That’s exactly how I felt when I watched Evelyn compete during SkillCase. Her pound dribble splits were among the best in the group, and the pace/effort she used during drills all day set the standard. Evelyn’s pushout dribbles and behind-the-back snap transfers were smooth. During the three lane rush, Evelyn sprinted the floor, caught passes cutting full-speed to the rim, and exploded off two feet, finishing well with both hands. Evelyn has silky smooth shooting mechanics. She caught passes balanced and fired shots with a quick release, while maintaining a fast pace as she sprinted to the different spots. Evelyn was efficient from two and three-point spots in the drills. During 1v1, Evelyn locked down opponents on defense and closed out quickly to block shots. She swished a layup after an evasive euro-step move and finished another layup off two feet after a shifty crossover dribble. Evelyn was a leader in the five-star passing drill, directing others where to throw the ball and where to move when they were confused. In games, Evelyn was an effective facilitator, scorer, and defender. She swiped the ball away to dish out an assist and stole it again, then dribbled into a three-pointer from the slot. Evelyn ended the day strong during the rebounding drill. She’s checking the length, athleticism, IQ, communication, effort, and fundamental boxes to be a high-level guard. Evelyn is a prospect who looks ready to have a big day at the Freshman Showcase.

Evelyn impressed me greatly when I saw her at SkillCase alongside high schoolers as a 7th grader. She was one of the best prospects in the gym that day and looks like one of the best guards in this 2029 class right now. Evelyn creates separation from defenders with her crafty crossover combinations and attacks downhill with a burst to score contested layups. She can fill it up with her perimeter shooting and has excellent court vision. Evelyn delivers accurate passes with both hands and creates for others instead of forcing up shots. She is very athletic with length and effort, which makes her an effective defender. Evelyn is a prospect that I’m very excited to watch this June as she joins a talented Detroit Country Day roster.
