The featured image is of [player_tooltip player_id='486509' first='Maya' last='Layton'] (2026) of Faith Christian High School.

With the 2023-2024 season having concluded a little over a week ago, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 1A performed during the 2023-2024 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2027), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won't see Freshmen in any additional groupings other than Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 1A.

.

TOP CLASS 1A AWARDS

These postseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I thought stood out in Class 1A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.

Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='338899' first='Zoe' last='Willems'], 2024, 5-7 G, Bethany Christian H.S.
- The meaning of most valuable player to me leans more towards the idea of if you removed this player from their team, how would their team continue to perform. This year in Class 1A, however, I've adjusted that slightly. Bethany Christian was a State Finalist a season ago, and it appeared as though they would be on track for a repeat performance, but unfortunately Zoe's backcourt 'mate was in and out of the lineup all year. Still, the Bruins posted an 18-7 record and won a Sectional title, where as two years ago they were 11-12 in a similar situation. Zoe really stepped it up this season, averaging a career-best 20.6 points, 4.3 assists, and 4.8 steals per game, plus she pulled down 9.4 rebounds per game. She finished her career with 1661 points and an impressive 885 rebounds for a guard.

Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='295760' first='Hadley' last='Crosier'], 2025, 5-9 G, Lanesville H.S.
- As opposed to the most valuable player award, the most outstanding player award points at simply the best basketball player in all of Class 1A, regardless of team quality, depth etc. Hadley has now been the most talented, versatile player on back-to-back State Championship teams for Lanesville. Unfortunately, she went down with a knee injury early during the Class 1A game a couple of weekends ago, or else everyone in the state would have been able to see what a talent she is. Hadley has a nice versatility to her game, to where she can handle the ball and run offense, score it consistently at all three levels, plus she is a willing and capable defender who has the size and athleticism to defend multiple positions equally well.

Most Improved Player: [player_tooltip player_id='825863' first='Samantha' last='Redinger'], 2024, 5-7 W, Argos Community H.S.
- Not often do you see kids make such a significant jump from their Junior to Senior year, but Samantha made major strides offensively as a Senior. She entered 2023-2024 having averaged a solid 15.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game as a Junior, but what she did this year was outstanding. She nearly doubled her scoring to 29.8 points per game, including highs of 55, 50, 47, and 42 points. Her six worst games were between 11 and 19 points, and they were 1-5 in those games (9-8 in all other games). Additionally, Samantha improved her rebounding (5.5 rpg), assists (2.4 apg), and steals (3.5spg), while showing a competitive motor and nice shooting touch outside (86-233, 37%).

Comeback Player of the Year: [player_tooltip player_id='880516' first='Shelby' last='Allen'], 2025, 6-0 C, Lanesville H.S.
- The Comeback Player of the Year award tends to either go to someone who has dealt with an injury, or who essentially took a year off and returned to action. In Shelby's case, she began the season missing games. When she returned on December 29th, it was a slower return, as she averaged just 6.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game through her first four games back. But then something just clicked, as she averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game over the final 13 games. That was highlighted down the stretch run for the Eagles, as Shelby scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Final Four game against North Central (Farmersburg), then came off the bench to score 20 points and grab 7 rebounds in the Class 1A State Finals.

Newcomer of the Year: Luane Schoonbroodt, 2024, 5-10 F, Union City H.S.
- Typically, I point to a Freshman in this spot, but in this unique case, Luane is a Senior foreign exchange student who surprised everyone, including her teammates and coach at Union City, when she showed up and showed out all season. She is an athletically built, wiry-strong, long, and fluidly athletic forward. The Belgium native showed the ability to play physical inside and battle on the boards or even score it around the block at times, but she also spent a great deal of time handling the ball in transition, making plays for herself or others. She is a multilevel scorer, though she's probably best suited shooting it in the mid-post, though she can handle it comfortably around the perimeter.

.

ADDITIONAL CLASS 1A AWARDS

Toughest Player: [player_tooltip player_id='326492' first='Mariah' last='Stoltzfus'], 2024, Bethany Christian H.S.
Best Motor: [player_tooltip player_id='177322' first='Kenzie' last='Fulks'], 2024, Bethesda Christian H.S.
Best Shooter: [player_tooltip player_id='828004' first='Ava' last='McGrade'], 2025, Lakewood Park Christian Academy
Best Scorer: [player_tooltip player_id='825863' first='Samantha' last='Redinger'], 2024, Argos Community H.S.
Best Passer: [player_tooltip player_id='486527' first='Carly' last='Davison'], 2026, Clinton Central H.S.
Best Rebounder: Alyssa Simpson, 2024, Rising Sun H.S.
Best Shot-Blocker: [player_tooltip player_id='622340' first='Alaina' last='Diamond'], 2027, Loogootee H.S.
Best Defender: [player_tooltip player_id='486509' first='Maya' last='Layton'], 2026, Faith Christian H.S.
Best Athlete: [player_tooltip player_id='486528' first='Laniah' last='Davis'], 2026, Marquette Catholic H.S.
Most Versatile: Luane Schoonbroodt, 2024, Union City H.S.

.

CLASS 1A ALL-STATE TEAMS

Like the postseason awards (above), this was another attempt to honor girls who stood out in Class 1A during the 2023-2024 season. These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments.
