The Best Small Town Prospect from All 50 States

Just because you’re from a small area doesn’t mean you have a small game. There are collegiate basketball players hailing from every corner of America.
The Prep Girls Hoops Scouts, who pride themselves on having a keen eye for spotting unheralded prospects, has come together to shine a light on small town talent. It is our goal to provide coverage for prospects at all levels of college basketball, regardless of where you’re from.
Below, check out the very best small town prospect from all 50 states, as submitted by our scouting experts across the country.
Alabama
The Tulane commit, Wynn, is a super tough kid. Aggressive ball-handler who gets down hill. Has a nice shot from the perimeter and can knife through defenses on her way to the rim. Main strength is her defense, where she will lock down an opponent the full length of the floor. Creating havoc is what she does best and one of the reasons why the Green Wave got a steal in this prospect.

Smith is a dominant force on the floor. Someone that can be moved to the post to dominate her weaker opponent or she can move to the mid-range/perimeter and take advantage of her quick first step capabilities. Smith is ranked as the #1 player in the 2024 class in California for a reason. No questions asked.

Florida
Gardner is one of the most talented and versatile prospects in the state of Florida. She is instant-offense from anywhere on the floor. She can shoot the three at a high percentage, handle the rock, fill the lanes in transition, and maneuver to score in the paint. Defensively, Gardner is an elite shot-blocker who holds her own in the paint against power forwards and centers. Gardner also cleans the glass at a high level on both ends of the court.

Aliyah Bantolina
Aliyah Bantolina
A competitor that may not be the tallest individual on the court but she has a big game. Bantolina is a guard with a shifty skill-set. She is always flying around the floor, looking to make important plays for her teammates. She is gifted offensively with her ability to square her body to the hoop and make a lot of her attempts from any level but she is also scrappy on defense. She demonstrates active hands each possession and this leads to a lot of deflections/steals for herself. Bantolina has an determined play-style and I’m excited to see what she can do with it this winter at Campbell High School.

Georgia
Heading into her junior season, Green is already a two-time All-State selection. She is a physically dominant presence that has 886 points and 539 rebounds through her first two seasons with a career average of 17 points and 10.4 rebounds. Dodge County has compiled a 48-7 record since Green’s debut. This spring, Green earned offers from South Alabama, Jacksonville State, Appalachian State and Bethune-Cookman.

Carlie Latta
Carlie Latta
Latta is one of the top scorers in the state. She averaged 25 points a game last year and did that shooting a high percentage from the field.

Illinois
One of the most dominant players in Illinois. The Nebraska commit has the ability and skillset to be impactful in multiple positions, and that’s on both sides of the ball. Finishing her junior campaign with a trip to the 1A title game. Hargrove finished her season averaging a double-double (21 PPG and 12 RPG) and a First Team All State selection by both the IBCA and The Associated Press. A superb talent with tremendous potential.

Renn is a long, fluidly athletic, and smooth forward. She continues to grow. Plus, she has done a tremendous job of developing her skill over the past couple of years. She has transformed from a solid interior forward to a high-major Division I prospect as a face-up forward.

Iowa
Levin has been an Iowa Hawkeyes commit for a few years now and for good reason. She is highly skilled in all aspects of the game. She can lead her team offensively in anyway asked, while being a stifling defender to anyone bringing up the basketball. Her game speaks for itself and that’s blatantly obvious if you watch her compete for as little as five minutes.

Kansas
Weishaar’s game exploded during the summer 2022 club season. A terrific 6’3″ shot-blocker who also shoots the three-ball comfortably and is active on the boards, Weishaar received two class 2A POY honors after her Riverside Cyclones finished as state runner-up. She is a University of Central Missouri commit.

Arizona Patterson
Arizona Patterson
Patterson would be considered as a “Swiss Army knife” type player in my book. She has good height at 6-foot and a versatile game-style. There isn’t anything she can’t do on the floor. She moves effortlessly without the ball and is dominate whenever it is in her hands. She demonstrates having a deep offensive “bag” in each contest she participates in. If you are trying to find a player that is going to get the fans out of their seats, look no further.

Minnesota
The fact that her given name is Jordan Carolina Zubich tells you everything you need to know about where the long-distance shooting sensation desperately wanted to play college basketball. That dream came true for the North Carolina commit from a tiny high school on Minnesota’s Iron Range. Zubich’s play on the Under Armor Circuit with the Minnesota Fury cemented her status as one of America’s best bombers. Last winter, Jordan averaged 27 points per game while leading her school to the Class A state championship.

Montana

Paige Lofing
Paige Lofing
After averaging 26 PPG, 6 RPG, 5.3 APG, 4.6 SPG as a sophomore, this season could see Lofing up the ante and crank up the heat even more! Already having eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone, she has a chance to cross the 2,000 point mark as a junior, something only a handful have accomplished in the state of Montana. Slashing moves to the hoop, sniper-like 3-point prowess, terrific rebounding from the guard spot & superior court vision makes her the complete basketball player.

Nebraska
Dolliver is a physically-gifted player, who can do a little bit of everything for her team throughout a contest. She doesn’t need the ball to produce at a high rate and that speaks volumes about her game-play as a whole.

Nevada

Olivia Lara
Olivia Lara
A “do-it all” type of guard. As a coach, you may not know what you are going to get exactly out of Lara but you know the you will get productivity in a few ways before the game is over. That’s a given. Last winter, she did a a good job of making her mark in almost every positive category you can imagine on the court. Lara will be on the team that will have a good chance at making their State Playoff’s once again this season. With some veteran leadership returning to this Pyramid Lake team, anything is possible. Especially when you have players like Lara on the roster, a game changer.

She totaled 647 points, 208 rebounds and 128 steals and eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark in a 1st round playoff game in March. Efficient on both sides of the ball, she was one of the top steals leaders the state at 4.4 per game. A savvy combo guard with a good feel and pace to her game. Badonie, a three-time All-State selection, is a playmaking shot creator and reliable double-figure scorer (13.5 PPG). Has excellent vision in the half court and works the pick and roll effectively handling the ball.

North Dakota
Other than being an highly skilled player offensively, Mataeya Mathern is fantastic on the floor because of her high motor and defensive prowess. There are not many others that I would take against Mathern in the full court with how tenacious she plays defense. Each contest she is either diving on the floor or helping up a fallen teammate, after they have given it their all on that possession. Don’t get me wrong, Mathern is very efficient on offense at a number of positions but she eats on defense and that’s something any coach would love to have on their roster.

Ohio
Mounce has seen her game grow from the first time she stepped onto the floor as a freshman. She was the Player of the Year in her league as a sophomore and has added to her arsenal. She is a smooth ball handler and her size creates a mismatch problem. Her length allows her to create issues defensively and she may be the best athlete in Ohio in her class.

Oklahoma
West is back as a junior to defend Hammon’s State Championship with improved offensive footwork and even better shooting touch from midrange. She already racked up the blocks and absolutely shuts down the paint, but with even more explosiveness added to her game this season, the Hammon defense will be lethal.

Shelby Bruney
Shelby Bruney
Coming from the small coastal town of Astoria, Oregon, Bruney is one of the most all-around talented basketball players in the state. Last season, she was the Cowapa League player of the year and the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, and was the only sophomore to be named first team all-state. Clearly, Bruney is an absolute force on both ends of the floor. With a quick, killer three-point shot and the athleticism to drive by just about any defender, she is a nightmare for defenses. While on the defensive end herself, her length and anticipation allow her to get tips on any ball in her general area. Astoria is coming off a third place finish in the state at the 4A level, and their team — led by Bruney — will continue to do their small town proud.

Volmer is a small-town kid with a big future at the University of North Dakota. She has all the tools needed to score the basketball and plays with electrifying energy. She is a matchup nightmare with great length, athleticism, and a high basketball IQ. On defense, she changes the game with her ability to create turnovers and guard multiple positions.

Tennessee
Multi-level scoring threat who is a sharpshooter. As a fearless competitor, it doesn’t matter if it’s EYBL or State tournament, Beaty is making an impact on the game. She’s super tough with the ball in her hands, knifing through competitors, sizing them up to go by them with her quick first step, or unleashing her step-back 3 ball from the perimeter. Heady basketball player who can score the rock at a consistent clip. One of the best in our state who is on Power 5 coaches radars.

Texas
First of all, Harris is heady along with being fearless and that combination in itself makes her a threat when she has the ball. Her poise under pressure immediately grabbed my attention, well so did her dropping the ball from mid to long-range with ease. She wants the ball down the stretch and she can deliver.

Utah
Skinner has the ability to take over a game with here elite three level scoring. Not only can she create for herself, she can make things happen for her teammates as she gets into the lane and can pick a defense apart. While only a junior she has time to work on many aspects of her game, but as a lead guard she can really go. Best prospect in the state regardless of class.
Vermont
The ultimate competitor. Moser locks up defensively, runs the show offensively, and does it all with a passion and flare not often matched. Anna is Vermont’s rising star.

Washington
A dynamic and strategic player. Someone that stands with more than adequate height, while being shifty with the ball in her hands. Deadly off of the dribble and very good at creating in a plethora of ways, whenever Fiso is attacking the basket. The Oregon Ducks definitely got one of the best players out of Washington in the 2024 class. No doubt about it.

West Virginia
Britton knows how to lead by example. Plain and simple. The young lady never asks any teammate to do anything she wouldn’t be willing to do herself. Her high basketball IQ allows her to play so many different roles. The most impressive part of her game may be that she can guard positions 1 through 5.
