Class 6A Storylines to Follow

Best Dynamic Duo in District 1?

One of the favorites in Class 6A headlines District 1, Edmond Memorial returns one of the best 1-2 punches in Oklahoma with Oregon commit [player_tooltip player_id='309983' first='Janiyah' last='Williams'] and Utah commit [player_tooltip player_id='315217' first='Avery' last='Hjelmstad']. After reaching the Class 6A semifinals last year, energetic, athletic and multifaceted Williams and gritty sniper Hjelmstad very well could have the pedigree and senior urgency to get the job done in March. They appear to be the clear headliner for District 1 (the coaches agree, as they're the preseason number 1 in 6A with 13 first place votes). Which asks the questions, who will challenge Memorial and their outstanding pair of players?

Mustang is fresh off a Class 6A State tournament appearance, so they're firmly in the mix. Especially as they have a dynamic duo of their own, senior [player_tooltip player_id='551215' first='Cherish' last='Haywood'] and junior [player_tooltip player_id='396323' first='Mya' last='Alston']. Both are plus athletes, with Haywood as an ELITE defender. And Alston is starting to blossom into a complete scorer. Norman North looks to be in the mix as well, as recent Pepperdine commit [player_tooltip player_id='309986' first='Seleh' last='Harmon'] and [player_tooltip player_id='310158' first='Olivia' last='Watkins'] are fresh off strong summers after great junior campaigns. Look for Harmon to continue to pour in the points for the Lady Timberwolves, while Watkins has the size to impact the game and the versatility to make her presence felt all over the court.

Tigers, Panthers, Yellowjackets, oh my.

There's even Lions, Wolves, and Wildcats in District 2, but the battle at the top likely comes from one of Norman, Putnam City North and Choctaw.

Considering the recent traditions of the programs, it's a bit of a shock that the only one of the three that made state last year was Putnam City North. The Lady Panthers where a fun group last year, filled with hard nosed guards and finished in the final 8 for 6A. They're still firmly a Class 6A State Tournament contender with [player_tooltip player_id='802022' first='Nykaiya' last='Dillard'] running the show as a lead guard and the explosive scoring upside of [player_tooltip player_id='310156' first='HaNiya' last='Geretta'].

While a preseason rankings of 6th in the State from the coaches might have the Panthers on the top perch for District 2, the tradition rich programs of Norman and Choctaw will be fierce fighters for the district title. Norman still has [player_tooltip player_id='309980' first='Keeley' last='Parks'], who is simply a bucket and a potential McDonalds All American. A summer knee injury to junior point guard [player_tooltip player_id='483160' first='Ady' last='Hybl'] is concerning, but the Lady Tigers are expected to have a deep freshman Class. With players that should be ready to make an impact sooner, rather than later.

Then there's Choctaw. Last year they were undefeated heading into Area. Back to back defeats that weekend saw their season shockingly end before the State Tournament. There's nothing like the extra motivation of bitter defeats. With junior two way guard [player_tooltip player_id='576992' first='Aliyah' last='Duval'] at the helm, expect the Lady Yellow Jackets to be one of the toughest outs in Oklahoma. From a sleeper standpoint, keep an eye on Piedmont as they enter year in Class 6A. There's promise in their rising junior class with [player_tooltip player_id='762035' first='Destiny' last='Duffy'] and [player_tooltip player_id='957693' first='Ava' last='Watkins'], along with freshman [player_tooltip player_id='944129' first='Najya' last='Wilson'] as a potential early impact player.

District 3, the deepest in 6A?

The preseason favorite in District is Bixby. The Lady Spartan program has become a powerhouse in 6A with regular State Tournament appearances. The Lady Spartans' [player_tooltip player_id='572438' first='Kate' last='Wernli'] is a big time shot maker as well, with plenty of teammates who can make the defense pay from deep. But it won't be an easy battle for the Lady Spartans with a DEEP District. There's neighboring school district Union as one of the top rivals. They have quality upperclassmen and an exciting freshman group (2028 looks to be special in Oklahoma and the incoming Davis twins are apart of that). And don't count out Owasso as the Lady Rams reached the Class 6A semifinals last year. Sophomore forward [player_tooltip player_id='900488' first='Madilyn' last='Hill'] is a nightly double double threat and one of the top 2027s in Oklahoma.

Adding to the gauntlet like nature of District 3 are two of the west side teams who are making the trek across the Turner Turnpike. Westmoore's [player_tooltip player_id='572451' first='Kyiah' last='Prestridge'] is Oklahoma's top junior prospect, with a bright colligate future ahead. Then there's the defending champs, Putnam City West. The Lady Patriots have a new head coach but still have a very strong junior core that's headlined by elite lead guard [player_tooltip player_id='572453' first='Jayla' last='Constant'].

Will the Lady Chieftains shake up Class 6A District 4?

Edmond North has been on a legendary type run with back to back State Titles in 2022 and 2023, before losing a nail biter last year in the title game. With a disciplined and tough program, even with player turnover the Lady Huskies are still expected to be among the top teams in Oklahoma. Especially after strong summers from junior duo Johri Hall and [player_tooltip player_id='525640' first='Grace' last='Jackson']. Those two will be eager to add to the tradition at Siberian Gym. But due to a shift in ADM, Edmond North is not the only team that won a State Title in 2023. Sapulpa is back in 6A for the first time in a few years, and the Lady Chieftains have been one of the powerhouses of 5A. Last year, Sapulpa was runner ups in 5A and still have key upperclassmen with big time experience and game in sharpshooting [player_tooltip player_id='315186' first='Wrigley' last='Adkisson'] and sparkplug junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='574232' first='Riki' last='Mcquarters']. Combining with a talented 2027 group including [player_tooltip player_id='909642' first='Kianna' last='Littlebear'], the Lady Chieftans look ready to embrace the challenge of a 6A schedule.

While both of the programs have recent championship pedigree, according to the coach's poll they're not the preseason favorite in District 4. That would be the Broken Arrow Lady Tigers. They have one of the very best scorers in the nation, [player_tooltip player_id='309979' first='McKenzie' last='Mathurin'] at the helm. The recent Michigan basketball commitment made a Class 6A Semifinal appearance as a sophomore, before falling short in Area as a junior. The skilled and explosive scorer is one of the must watch players for any Oklahoma basketball fan, as she looks to lead BA to their first state title since 2015.
