Preseason Awards: Class 3A

Now that I've spent this past week previewing each of the 16 Sectionals in Class 3A, I wanted to take a look at who I think could be the better teams and individuals in Indiana throughout the 2023-2024 season. Taking some ideas from college preview magazines, below I've assembled a variety of preseason awards, preseason all-state teams, plus a preseason honorable mention section. I've given past years' performances some consideration, but the players below are listed based specifically on how I think they will perform this season.   .   TOP TEAMS IN CLASS 3A   1. Norwell (21-4) 2. Hamilton Heights (20-6) 3. Indian Creek (27-2) 4. Gibson Southern (21-5) 5. Rensselaer Central (14-10) 6. West Lafayette (18-6) 7. Greensburg (13-10) 8. Scottsburg (19-6) 9. Twin Lakes (28-1) 10. Washington (14-9)   The Next-10 (arranged alphabetically): Bellmont (18-5), Benton Central (18-9), Corydon Central (27-3), Danville (21-5), Evansville Memorial (25-2), Fairfield (28-2), New Prairie (13-9), Tippecanoe Valley (22-4), Tri-West (7-17), Western (15-9)   .   TOP CLASS 3A PRESEASON AWARDS   These preseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I think stand out in Class 3A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled each description best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.   Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='177352' first='Camryn' last='Runner'], 2024, 5-9 G, Hamilton Heights H.S. - With regards to the MVP award, I look at how the top teams would fair without their best player on the roster. Year after year, the Hamilton Heights Huskies continue to graduate quality players, but Runner remains on the roster. Year after year, the Huskies win games and contend for a Sectional title, and year after year, she's a huge reason for that. Runner is long, fluidly athletic, quick, shifty, and skillful. She can play on the ball and act as the primary point guard, but she's such a good shooter, she can score at all three levels, and she's a heady and almost sneaky defender. I would expect her Senior year to be as strong as the previous three. She has committed to continue her playing career at the University of Evansville.   Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='201885' first='Faith' last='Wiseman'], 2024, 6-4 F, Indian Creek H.S. - With regards to the MOP award, I look at who the best players and prospects are in the entire group of Class 3A kids, and factor in who I think will be the most productive. Wiseman is a tall, long, athletic forward who loves to play facing the basket. She has signed with Indiana University, and her ability to play away from the rim will make her a matchup problem. She will need to continue improving her strength for Big Ten play, but she can put it on the floor productively, she can knock down jump-shots, and she's able to defend wings and forwards of all kinds. The Lady Braves have been knocking on the door, so don't be surprised to see them make a run to Gainbridge Fieldhouse at the end of the season.   Most Outstanding Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='610126' first='Rylee' last='Canaan'], 2027, 6-0 F, Evansville Memorial H.S. - This was actually a tough decision in Class 3A, because I can see a number of Freshmen highly affecting the Varsity level at their school. With regards to Canaan, I chose her for three reasons. First, she is skilled, talented, and checks all the boxes as far as being one of the top prospects in Indiana's 2027 class. Second, she is playing for a team that should be highly successful this season and could make a deep playoff run, and third, she should be a strong contributor for the Tigers. Memorial has some really nice guards and wings in the Junior and Senior classes, but Canaan's size and versatility can really cause opponents problems as they break down defenses in the half-court.   . These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. While we can debate who should be where, I do think it's at least easy to understand why each of the players listed below were selected to be honored.
