2023-2024 Class 3A Honors

With the 2023-2024 season having concluded a little over a week ago, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 3A performed during the 2023-2024 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2027), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won't see Freshmen in any additional groupings other than Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 3A.   .   TOP CLASS 3A AWARDS   These postseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I thought stood out in Class 3A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.   Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='177352' first='Camryn' last='Runner'], 2024, 5-9 G, Hamilton Heights H.S. - The meaning of most valuable player to me leans more towards the idea of if you removed this player from their team, how would their team continue to perform. Camryn is one of the best players in Class 3A, and she's vitally important to what the Huskies have done the last couple of seasons. She obviously shoots/scores it at a high level, but she does a lot of other things for them as well. She can handle the ball and initiate the offense, can act as a creator/facilitator when necessary, she rebounds the ball well as a guard, and she's a nice defensive player, whether she is on or off the ball. She has committed to play at the University of Evansville next season.   Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='201885' first='Faith' last='Wiseman'], 2024, 6-4 F, Indian Creek H.S. - As opposed to the most valuable player award, the most outstanding player award points at simply the best basketball player in all of Class 3A, regardless of team quality, depth etc. At 6-4, Faith is one of the most talented kids in the state, regardless of class. She is a fluid, bouncy, athletic forward. She has some ball skill, the ability to knock down the occasional jumper, and she can defend multiple positions. She can sit down and defend the perimeter, or she can protect the paint and block/affect shots. She is headed to Indiana University next Fall, and as she continues to gain strength, look for her to eventually earn a big opportunity because of her combination of size, skill, and athleticism.   Most Improved Player: [player_tooltip player_id='825918' first='Ava' last='Egolf'], 2024, 5-10 F, Tippecanoe Valley H.S. - Sometimes a change of scenery helps, and that's exactly what boosted Ava's play this season. She transferred into Tippecanoe Valley from nearby Warsaw, and she immediately became one of their most impactful players for the Vikings. They used her in multiple roles, and she even went from more of a back-to-the-basket player to handling the ball in transition and initiating the offense at times. Ava also showed nice versatility as a defender. As a Junior at Warsaw, she averaged 3.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, but this season as a Senior, she was at 13.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game.   Comeback Player of the Year: [player_tooltip player_id='177332' first='Sophie' last='Johnson'], 2024, 6-0 F, Evansville Memorial H.S. - Sophie is a long, wiry, bouncy athlete who can play inside-out. She can act as a point forward, play in the mid-post, and protect the rim on defense. Last season, Sophie unfortunately tore her ACL during state tournament play and missed the entire Spring & Summer grassroots season. She returned at the beginning of the 2023-2024 season to have the best all-around statistical year of her career. She increased her scoring and assists from her Junior year, plus she shot it as well as ever from the field, behind the 3-point line, and from the charity stripe. She is currently uncommitted, but she reportedly has an opportunity to join the University of Evansville's team in some capacity.   Most Outstanding Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='756247' first='Paige' last='Schnaus'], 2027, 6-1 C, Gibson Southern H.S. - Paige walked into a great situation as a Freshman, joining a team that was already successful and talented, led by two outstanding guards you can find below. Paige brought the interior presence for the Titans, helping them to a Class 3A State Championship this year. She had the normal Freshman hiccups, but she got stronger as the year progressed, and she was outstanding in the state tournament. Over their seven playoff games, Paige averaged 13.4 points per game with a low of 9 points, and she averaged 9.1 rebounds per game, up from 8.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game during 23 regular season games.   . These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. While we can debate who should be where, I do think it's at least easy to understand why each of the players listed below were selected to be honored.
