Preseason Awards: Class 4A

Now that I've spent this past month previewing each of the 16 Sectionals in Class 4A, I wanted to take a look at who I think could be the better teams and individuals in Indiana throughout the 2023-2024 season. Taking some ideas from college preview magazines, below I've assembled a variety of preseason awards, preseason all-state teams, plus a preseason honorable mention section. I've given past years' performances some consideration, but the players below are listed based specifically on how I think they will perform this season. (All records and statistics below are from the 2022-2023 season, unless otherwise noted.)   .   TOP TEAMS IN CLASS 4A   1. Lawrence Central (16-8) 2. Hamilton Southeastern (21-3) 3. TOP CLASS 4A PRESEASON AWARDS   These preseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I think stand out in Class 4A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled each description best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.   Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='177362' first='Juliann' last='Woodard'], 2024, 6-1 F, Jennings County H.S. - With regards to the MVP award, I look at how the top teams would fair without their best player on the roster. Juliann has been a model of consistency at the bare minimum, and actually, she has grown and developed her game a great deal since she arrived in high school. She has always been a strong, physical, aggressive front-liner who can score in the paint and rebound just about anything. Over the past 12-18 months, however, she has greatly improved her handle and her perimeter jumper to where you must guard her outside as well. When she plays with her true physical identity inside plus knocks down shots outside, she truly is indefensible. She has committed to play at Michigan State University.   Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='295763' first='Jaylah' last='Lampley'], 2025, 6-2 W, Lawrence Central H.S. - With regards to the MOP award, I look at who the best players and prospects are in the entire group of Class 4A kids, and I factor in who I think will be the most productive, mixed with pure talent. Jaylah has been impactful for the Lady Bears since the moment she arrived in high school. She has height and has done a nice job of developing her strength over the past couple of years. She can go to the block, power through defenders, and she's a willing rebounder/interior defender. At the same time, she continues to work on her touch around the perimeter, but she has always possessed a shiftiness to her game at her size, and she's able to attack off the dribble and score as a true wing. She remains uncommitted.   Most Outstanding Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='751095' first='Lillie' last='Graves'], 2027, 6-0 F, McCutcheon H.S. - There are several Class 4A Freshmen who will affect their Varsity team's success in 2023-2024. However, Lillie is our top 2027 prospect in the state, regardless of class, she has talent, skill, and a nice understanding of the game, plus her Maverick team will certainly benefit from having her in the lineup all season. Lillie is a long, wiry-strong, fluid, and fairly smooth forward. Throughout middle school, she had a solid handle and could attack from the perimeter, but she would typically resort to heading to the block when she needed a basket. Over the past year, the youngster has worked hard to develop a much more consistent perimeter jumper, and as that continues to grow, she will be even more difficult to match up with.   . These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. While we can debate who should be where, I do think it's at least easy to understand why each of the players listed below were selected to be honored.
