2023-2024 Class 4A Honors

With the 2023-2024 season having concluded a little over a week ago, I wanted to take the time to offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 4A performed during the 2023-2024 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshman class (2027), I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award to honor them, so you won't see Freshmen in any additional groupings other than Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 4A.   .   TOP CLASS 4A AWARDS   These postseason awards are an attempt at honoring girls who I thought stood out in Class 4A. Typically, there are multiple candidates for each award, and every award can be easily debatable, but I chose the individuals below based on who I thought filled the description the best. Each award is determined through different criteria, as some awards are based primarily on opinion, while others are decided with a heavy influence from statistical merit.   Most Valuable Player: [player_tooltip player_id='176409' first='Chloe' last='Spreen'], 2024, 5-9 G, Bedford North Lawrence H.S. - The meaning of most valuable player to me leans more towards the idea of if you removed this player from their team, how would their team continue to perform. Chloe has always been one of the best basketball players in her class; she is tremendously skilled, a nice all-around athlete, and she has a good understanding of the game. This year, with significant 2023 graduation losses, she was relied upon a lot more by the Stars. Though her individual scoring only increased slightly, BNL averaged nearly 8.0 points less per game, hinting at fewer possessions, therefore she affected a much higher percentage of possessions offensively, both scoring it and as a passer. The Stars finished with a 20-5 record and won their 13th consecutive Sectional Championship.   Most Outstanding Player: [player_tooltip player_id='295763' first='Jaylah' last='Lampley'], 2025, 6-2 W, Lawrence Central H.S. - As opposed to the most valuable player award, the most outstanding player award points at simply the best basketball player in all of Class 4A, regardless of team quality, depth etc. I feel like this season, Jaylah took her game to the next level. She was arguably the best player on the best team in 2023-2024, and it showed nearly every time they took the floor. She is a nice athlete with tremendous length, but it's her ability to play at all three levels that makes her a matchup nightmare. She plays with a great motor and will battle inside, she has skill and touch in the mid-post, plus she is now becoming a lethal threat from the perimeter, whether it's handling the ball and attacking the rim North/South or knocking down open jump-shots with consistency.   Most Improved Player: [player_tooltip player_id='298252' first='Ava' last='Ziolkowski'], 2024, 6-1 F, Crown Point H.S. - Ava has been a nice basketball player and a contributor throughout her career. But when the Crown Point coaching staff decided to focus on her this season, I'm not sure even they counted on this type of production. As a Freshman and Sophomore, Ava was a really nice role player on the Carrothers and Stoddard-led teams, averaging 3.1 and 5.3 points, respectively, mostly in blowout games as well. As a Junior she stepped into more of a leadership role, posting 17.9-point and 7.8-rebound averages. But this season, she was on another level, averaging 27.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, with a high of 55 points, plus five more games in the 40s. People will address her number of shot attempts, but she still shot 50% from the field, 32% from 3-point range, and 78% from the charity stripe.   Comeback Players of the Year: [player_tooltip player_id='201871' first='Alivia' last='Elmore'], 2024, 5-8 W, Jennings County H.S., and [player_tooltip player_id='295753' first='Laila' last='Abdurraqib'], 2025, 5-7 G, Lawrence Central H.S. - I'm not sure that these two ladies have ever met, but they have been through a lot of the same struggles over the last couple of years. Both have struggled through numerous injuries, however, each has also suffered consecutive ACL injuries and bounced back to be highly impactful for their teams this season. For Alivia, she returned and placed 3rd on their team in scoring (barely), 2nd in rebounding, and 2nd in assists. She has missed the last two Spring/Summer grassroots seasons, so her recruiting is just starting to pick up. Laila has also missed a lot of time, including grassroots ball, but she entered high school with tremendous college interest already. Still, she returned this season to lead the Bears from the point, and she even bailed them out of a few games with her ability to affect the game at both ends of the floor, either as a facilitator who can really shoot it, or as a tough-nosed on-ball defender. We are truly glad they are healthy and back on the court once again.   Most Outstanding Freshman: [player_tooltip player_id='751095' first='Lillie' last='Graves'], 2027, 6-0 W, McCutcheon H.S. - I think we all knew what Lillie was capable of, once she got to high school, so it really isn't to many people's surprise that she posted the numbers she did as a Freshman (1st on the team in scoring, 2nd in rebounding, 1st in assists, 1st in steals). However, I would like to point to the impact she had on the success of the Mavericks this year. While they have some talent, it is a young talent-base for McCutcheon, with four Sophomores and Lillie as their Top-5 scorers. Those Sophomores managed an 11-12 record last season, but together they came out this year and posted a 21-5 record, they won their Sectional, and they posted wins against traditionally strong teams like Lafayette Central Catholic, Benton Central, and Bishop Chatard. The next step will be for Lillie to continue building her skillset and understanding of the game, so those five losses seem like an afterthought.   . CLASS 4A ALL-STATE TEAMS   Like the postseason awards (above), this was another attempt to honor girls who stood out in Class 4A during the 2023-2024 season. These teams were selected based on equal parts talent, skill, potential, statistical accomplishments, and team accomplishments. This year I tried something a little different with Class 4A and offered a team for each graduating class, then a "High Honorable Mention" for the next ten kids, regardless of class. I felt like there were several more than five deserving of 1st Team All-State, so this was an attempt to honor all of those kids the best way I could. There are still 30 girls above regular "Honorable Mention", just like in 3A, 2A, and 1A, I've just laid out the teams in a different format.
